  • Which supplement should I take? #Supplement Explorer

Are you always on your phone looking at which supplements you should take? Do you look at reviews? How do you decide what to buy?

As someone who has been in the nutraceutical industry for over 10 years, I’ve worked with many suppliers and companies to understand why an ingredient is chosen, what research is behind it, and how to sell it to a consumer, so if you are looking for some answers to questions you may have, drop a comment, or even better check out the Supplement Explorer on the site. It is free to use, 3 questions, and a simple output. No info is stored.

I made the Supplement Explorer purely for my use and then thought, well, if it is useful for me, maybe it is useful for others. The tool is not affiliated with any company or brand, but was just a way for me to showcase what I find useful. If you use it, do give me feedback as to what you’d like to see it on too.

Stay well and remember, before taking any supplements, check with your doctor if it is a good fit for you or not!

  • Weight gain season is here!

    Weight gain season is here!

With Nov 1 being here and the weather changing again to a bit colder, most of us are going to start enjoying our food so to speak. The holiday season will be here before you know it and so will all the food. This is the time we tend to eat or rather over-eat at times. So what can you do about it? Know your macros. How? Start with calories in your food. Is there a quick way to determine how many calories are in something? Of course!

To start, here’s what you need to know: protein and carbs both have 4 calories per gram and fat has 9 calories per gram. (only two numbers you need to remember)

So, if something has 20g protein, 30g carbs, and 10g fat, you’d be getting:

    20 g * 4 = 80 calories from protein

    30 g * 4 = 120 calories from carbs

    10 g * 9 = 90 calories from fat

    for a total of 80 + 120 + 90 = 290 calories from this item!

Note, this is just a quick calculation, it definitely doesn’t take into account your lifestyle, activity level, height, weight, BMR (basal metabolic rate), etc. but it gives you enough info to quickly figure out how many calories you are consuming!

    Stay well!

#FF What did you miss this week?

Did you have a tough week? Did you check out some of the positive messages shared? I hope they provided some sort of advice that you could apply to your life and make the mundane seems extraoridinary!

Posts you might have missed this week:

    Not in control!

    What makes you happy?

    Dark clouds hanging overhead?

    Grow quietly

    Stay well!

  • Grow quietly

    Grow quietly

One thing that is super relevant in these times is that whatever you do is going to take time. From recovery from an illness to exercising and building muscle, it all takes time. Though time is so transient, we all tend to want it to speed up at times. Why does it take so much effort to achieve something difficult while other times, results occur so fast?

The pic is a good reminder of how growing slowly takes time and gives tremendous results while falling is very loud and once done, it is over. For me, this message is so important especially when I’m looking to get fitness results and job success. Both times, I need to remember that nothing happens overnight. For some of us, hard work is necessary. Am I up for the challenge? Sure. Do I expect to get derailed at times? Yup but that won’t stop me from continuing forward. All about perspective right?

    Stay well!

  • Dark clouds hanging overhead?

    Dark clouds hanging overhead?

With mental health day just passing recently, I thought it was important to discuss that we all have dark clouds that hang over us at times. How do you deal with it? Mental health issues are more common than we may know and we all attack our issues differently. How do you deal?

I deal by looking for the silver lining as mentioned in the pic. To me, if something isn’t going my way, I do remember at the same time that I have my health and other securities that I shouldn’t take for granted. I also attack stress by exercising. Don’t get me wrong, I still might eat junk or sleep uneasy but I tend to still see the glass half full so to me, it is all about perspective. Dark clouds? They linger but don’t necessarily drown me.

    Stay well!

  • What makes you happy?

    What makes you happy?

In these times, when many of us are struggling to make ends meet but at the same time find ways to save up for a new iPhone, one thing that I begin to question is what makes us happy? Happiness is defined in multiple ways depending on what you are reading but to me, it only matters on an individual level. What do I mean by that? Well, what makes me happy might not make you happy. Also, how long it makes me happy might be different for you as well. We all are striving for something more but what that more is equally important on a personal level, right?

So as the pic says, how you move forward is equally important as learning from the past. Got knocked down, pick up and move on, otherwise what choice do you have? Not to mention that being happy is truly beneficial for your health from sleep to diet to energy, all of it is tied together.

    Stay well!

  • Not in control!

    Not in control!

With the pandemic out of control in the US and cases hitting record highs, this week, I thought it would be good to discuss things that inspire us or are wins. Why? If we pay too much attention to the news, then we are bound to lose that hopeful nature that we all possess. So let’s start with something that inspired me.

The message in the pic on this post was an excellent reminder to me when stress gets out of hand, remember that there is a better way to deal with it. Don’t let it bog you down! Sometimes, it is easier to read than to apply it but just keeping that it in the back of your mind is important and can help you tackle that challenge. I know it helps me persevere.

#FF What did you miss this week?

Another week is done and lots of fun posts this week. With fall being here and pumpkin spice season and winter squash a staple, perhaps you are wondering are you getting all your nutrients—potassium? sodium?

Five things to like about Fall

    Too much sodium!

    Do you get enough Potassium?

    Stay well!

  • Do you get enough Potassium?

    Do you get enough Potassium?

Unlike sodium, which we know we get enough of in our diet, do we get enough potassium? What if you don’t like bananas? What do you do? Luckily, you can now find percentage potassium on the nutrition facts label of a packaged food, so that will help you see how much you are getting in a day.

First, do you know why you should have potassium in your diet? It can possibly help with blood pressure issues, muscle loss issues, and even counteract against negative sodium effects. For many of these reasons, potassium-rich diets are often recommended for cardio and bone health. How much potassium should you be consuming? A simple Google search shows that about 4700 mg a day is recommended but I’m sure the average person is not getting that much unless you are eating some of the below mentioned foods.

Potassium can be found in many leafy greens like spinach as well as in avocados, tomatoes, potatoes (including sweet potatoes), and beans. A popular fall staple is acorn squash which is loaded with potassium and antioxidants so pick one up next time you are the grocery store. Remember, eating whole foods is the way to go but what if you don’t have time to cook and eat? You can always try to get in potassium via coconut water or pomegranate juice but check that it doesn’t have added sugar as you’ll reap the benefit of potassium and negate it with the sugar in it.

When eating processed foods, it’s important to remember that any sort of processing (microwaving for example) tends to destroy nutrients including potassium so food sources with high potassium must be sought out. Is potassium missing in your diet? Check with your doctor or nutritionist and find out how you can add it in.

    Stay well!

  • Too much sodium!

    Too much sodium!

The other day I was having some chips from a Mexican restaurant and the first thing that I noticed was how much salt was on it. That’s a problem because?

Sodium is an ingredient that can affect how you feel daily. Iodized salt was necessary and developed to allow us to not develop goiters and thyroid issues but if you look at most packaging today there is a ton of salt in our diet. Do we need this much salt?

If you are looking to get healthier, the easiest way to see results without too much hard work is to limit your salt intake (after you check with your doc, of course). Remember, even a simple V8 juice, which many consider healthy, can have amounts like 1000 mg of salt. So what is making you healthier may also be making you bloated! What can you do about it? Read that nutrition label and see what your daily intake of salt is and then decide where you can cut back.

What can happen if you are eating too much sodium? Well, we know that if you are exercising and your body has too much salt, you will retain water and feel bloated which could result in that lethargic feeling or even cause headaches. Too much salt can also make you want to drink more which in turn leads to more bloating. High salt intakes are also known to cause kidney stones and stomach ulcers–both of which aren’t pleasant. Not to mention, increased salt intake can lead to higher blood pressure, resulting in the need for pharmaceutical meds as part of your regiment. Take what is written here (preceding) as one person’s opinion—for much more info regarding what salt is doing to you, ask your doctor, and do your own research.

  • Five things to like about Fall

Five things to like about Fall

As much as I love summer and the heat, fall has its charm too. Like what? Well for starters the leaves are changing color as seen in the pic but also I like the fact that cooler weather lets you exercise outside without excessively sweating. Another benefit of fall is that we can relax a bit more since we aren’t spending so much time outside with the sun being available to us shorter and days being overall shorter. So what are some things that make you happy and appreciate during fall?

For me, the five things that I like about fall are: 1) pumpkin spice 2) foilage change 3) hoodie weather 4) less sweating and 5) halloween and thanksgiving time

What five things do you like about fall?
