Which supplement should I take? #Supplement Explorer
Are you always on your phone looking at which supplements you should take? Do you look at reviews? How do you decide what to buy?
As someone who has been in the nutraceutical industry for over 10 years, I’ve worked with many suppliers and companies to understand why an ingredient is chosen, what research is behind it, and how to sell it to a consumer, so if you are looking for some answers to questions you may have, drop a comment, or even better check out the Supplement Explorer on the site. It is free to use, 3 questions, and a simple output. No info is stored.I made the Supplement Explorer purely for my use and then thought, well, if it is useful for me, maybe it is useful for others. The tool is not affiliated with any company or brand, but was just a way for me to showcase what I find useful. If you use it, do give me feedback as to what you’d like to see it on too.
Stay well and remember, before taking any supplements, check with your doctor if it is a good fit for you or not!

A very berry day!

Last week, I wrote about strawberries and how they are good for various nutrients so imagine my surprise when I found even more berries in a larger quantity when I went shopping. What did I find? Blueberries and raspberries. So you’re probably wondering how I can eat so many berries so quickly? It’s easy actually.
I continue to reap the antioxidants benefits whenever I eat them but after reading the book When to eat, I realized timing is everything. I typically eat them as a snack or as dessert because it satisfies both my satiety and sweet tooth cravings. Also, try to eat them before daylight is over so that the natural sugars won’t give you a nighttime insulin spike.
Have a very berry day! Buy local and organic if you can!

#FF What your egg yolk color says

Did you know that some egg yolks are brighter than others? Why is that? It all depends on what the hen ate. Depending on the feed that the farmer gave, the egg yolk could be super bright or muted yellow. Interesting right?
Too bad we can’t buy an egg by knowing the color of the yolk but that isn’t important even if you could. Why is that? No matter the color of the yolk, you are still reaping the benefits of eating an egg and gaining the nutrients, good fats, and choline that you need. To paraphrase, don’t judge an egg by its outside or in this case, insides!

Are you ready to hit the gym?

With more and more places opening in each State/country, the question that comes to mind is are we ready to go back to normal? Ready to go back to the gym?
I’m not sure I could go to a gym unless I saw constant sanitizing of equipment and some enforcement of social distancing—maybe have people with last names A-M go certain days and rest the other days. I doubt though that’s how it’s going to be. If you’re unsure, stick with your home workouts and stay well.
For me, until I have confidence that the numbers of deaths, cases are going down and there is a safe way to return to the gym, I’ll likely be sticking with my home workouts. No point of sweating it out at the gym only to get sick in the end!

Are you still taking your Vitamin D?

There is no cure so far for the coronavirus that is worldwide so as we turn to protect ourselves with personal protective equipment like gloves and masks, one might also want to consider taking vitamins like Vitamin D. Yes, vitamins are supplements to your diet but what’s interesting is that Vitamin D and the correlation between mortality via coronavirus is currently being studied and the results are interesting.
The article that I read (posted on my twitter @iatmnow) shows that countries above a certain latitude tended to have a higher deficiency in Vitamin D and so the body’s inflammatory response was comprised. What should you make of this early finding? To me, I’m already taking Vitamin D3 supplements as I know I don’t spend enough time outside so supplementing it makes sense but it seems that there is some evidence coming that perhaps Vitamin D could help. Science is tricky. Being in the field, I do question data and results because does it apply to everyone or just the select sample size that was reviewed? How many other studies confirm this finding and so on?
Unless you are eating a lot of salmon, cheese, egg yolks, etc then you might be Vitamin D deficient but the only way to tell this is by getting tested for it. No matter whether you choose to take Vitamin D or not, I think the study was very interesting, and hopefully, more studies come out supporting the same finding.
Please do speak with your doctor before you take any supplements as each of our bodies has a different chemical makeup!

Home workout check!

Since we are way past the month mark since the quarantine began, how successful are you with your home workouts? Are you going to leave quarantine healthy, fitter, or with a few extra pounds. Hopefully, the time off from the gym has been productive.
As for me, hitting home workouts at the same time each day has helped me stay on track. Is the burn the same as the gym? Nope but I have been active so that’s a win for me. Between park walks and home workouts, I do feel energized so that’s more important than anything else. Each of us works out for different reasons but whatever that reason is make sure it’s not something that isn’t attainable with your home workouts. Think SMART!

Ice Cream Time!

As you know by now, I have a wicked sweet tooth. Unfortunately, eating healthy and ice cream don’t go well together. Yes, there are many options today like Halo Top or even keto ice creams but not all ice creams taste that good right? So do you give up and go back to unhealthy ice cream eating or find something that you like? I did the latter.
Enlightened ice cream came in a flavor that I love—chocolate peanut butter—and it was only 100 calories per serving (4 servings per container). The question you likely have is does low-calorie ice cream taste good? Yes, Yes, Yes! This brand’s flavor was good and I never felt like I was missing out on eating ice cream. Plus, you know it is good if you want to finish eating the whole thing in one sitting.
My advice to find low-calorie ice cream is to look for the flavor that you enjoy and see if that brand has it then make sure it meets your requirements—whole milk, almond milk, coconut milk, vegan, etc. The more likely you know what you want, the more likely you’ll either find it or like it. You don’t have to skip out on ice cream just because it is loaded with calories, the proof is in the multiple options available today.

#FF Strawberry season is here!

Right before summer starts and watermelons are in, most of us enjoy strawberries! Yes, it is that time again—strawberry season. I know some of you get strawberries all year but others of us are not that fortunate.
To me, the best part of strawberry season is going to a strawberry farm and loading up my basket with so many strawberries and eating one or two or four along the way. Remember, strawberries are good for antioxidants and vitamins like Vitamin C and also have potassium, folates, and of course fiber.
Enjoy your strawberries!

Is your beverage about to lose its fizz?

Did you know there is likely to be a carbon dioxide shortage due to the coronavirus? Since supply can’t reach the manufacturers of beers, sodas, and other beverages, your favorite drink might either become more expensive or you might find it limited in stock. Incredible, right?
As the world tries to return to some sort of normalcy, we realize through these types of incidents how much our world has been changed. Don’t fret as when humans are pressed with a challenge, we tend to find a creative way to get to the solution.

What’s your temperature?

As many countries and states are beginning to reopen, even with the lack of testing available everywhere, there is one thing that companies are doing to reopen-taking temps of everyone that is coming in. Is this going to be sufficient enough? I guess we will find out in a few weeks if cases spike or not.
My doubt with these temp checks is that what if the thermometer isn’t calibrated? Everyone’s body temp is different when normal so if your daily body temp is 97.8F and you read 98.9F, are you sick and do you need to go home? Unless a nurse is taking the temp, how does the temp taker know what is acceptable unless you put a blanket rule like anything over a 100F means you need to stay home or not come in the building. Also, not to mention that you could be asymptomatic and still have the coronavirus. Everyone wants the economy to restart but I hope we aren’t puttting in false tests to ensure our safety.
I don’t know if temp taking is the best way to provide comfort to employees who fear the virus. I know for me, no matter all the precautions that I take, I don’t know what my colleague is doing before coming in to work so a temp test is really not going to allay my fears. Hopefully, there is a strategy to combat upcoming spikes because let’s face it for the economy to work, people have to live!

Supplement usage during the pandemic

As times are tough for many of us, one thing you’ll notice that is also limited in stock is/are supplements. People turn to a variety of supplements to avoid a trip to the doctor but remember a doctor’s visit is something that is necessary at times but supplements can help you get the nutrition you don’t get in by your daily food consumption.
So what are your go to supplements during the pandemic? Mine continue to be Ester C and biotin gummies as I feel those are helping me stay healthy and giving me hair, skin, nail benefits. I also tend to eat complete meals with protein, carbs, and fats so that I’m full and stay active via some exercise so that’s my daily regiment. What’s yours during these times?
