Which supplement should I take? #Supplement Explorer
Are you always on your phone looking at which supplements you should take? Do you look at reviews? How do you decide what to buy?
As someone who has been in the nutraceutical industry for over 10 years, I’ve worked with many suppliers and companies to understand why an ingredient is chosen, what research is behind it, and how to sell it to a consumer, so if you are looking for some answers to questions you may have, drop a comment, or even better check out the Supplement Explorer on the site. It is free to use, 3 questions, and a simple output. No info is stored.I made the Supplement Explorer purely for my use and then thought, well, if it is useful for me, maybe it is useful for others. The tool is not affiliated with any company or brand, but was just a way for me to showcase what I find useful. If you use it, do give me feedback as to what you’d like to see it on too.
Stay well and remember, before taking any supplements, check with your doctor if it is a good fit for you or not!

Marine collagen

A good new product that I found is Vital Proteins collagen. What makes it so good? Well, we I now collagen is good for skin and skin elasticity but most collagen is usually sourced from bovine (cow) so it makes it u consumable for me as I don’t eat beef or cow products due to religious reasons so when I found this alternative, I loved it!
Collagen in your skin changes as you get older and that is noticeable as the tightness in your skin in your 20s is reduced by the time you’re in your 40s. Do you use a collagen supplement? This marine collagen is tasteless and 2 scoops has 11g protein. I mix it in my protein shake and am good to go. Results are dependent on user and usage time. Not sure if this product is right for you, ask your doctor.

#FF Save money, buy in bulk?

Have you bought groceries lately? I’m betting that you are noticing your grocery bill go up. Why? Supply and demand are just one issue but mostly because farmers are unable to get food to the stores resulting in shortages and price increases. So if you don’t want to pay high prices, what can you do about it? I’ve seen some people cut back on the number of meals but I personally wouldn’t sacrifice a meal so what are some other options?
I found that shopping in bulk at Sam’s Club or Costco is helping me save money. Not only am I saving money, I’m also finding high quality produce. I’m a huge fan of fruits and right now the best place to get mangoes and strawberries, for example, is one of these bulk stores. Granted I now have to make sure that I eat them all before they turn into food waste but at least I’m getting what I want and can find it. Usually, I’m against buying in bulk but at times it is a better deal.
What will you do maximize your food intake while saving money?

How Personalized is your Health?

With a growing number of us being made to reevaluate our lifestyle choices due to the pandemic, one area that is booming right now is personalized health. Personalized health can include anything from a visit to the doctor to gym routines to just tracking your diet. Have you personalized your health currently?
A few months back, I’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who uses tele-docs as much as we do now or even someone who was tracking their food as much as they do now so what’s changed? I think the reason we are able to devote more time to our health now is that we are able to invest time in evaluating what matters most to us. I think the pandemic has shown that people do realize that mortality is very much entwined with one’s health so we should be able to control our future to some extent, right?
In the past, I’ve written about Styr or Habit but now personalized nutrition is going to take off even faster due to the confinement and lifestyle changes we all have had to make. So how personalized is your health currently?

Do you tabata?

Lately, I’ve been doing various tabatas to stay motivated while exercising at home. What is tabata? It is a 20s on 10 sec off exercise program that is usually 8 round which equals 4 mins. It will whip you into shape if done correctly. The nice thing is that you could pretty program many exercises in it.
An example would be:
Tabata, complete each exercise, 8 rounds, before moving on to the next. Take a 1 min rest between exercises.
Exercise 1: flutter kicks
Exercise 2: situps
Exercise 3: scissor kicks
Exercise 4: leg lifts
Those 4 exercises will give you a nice core workout in 16 mins (not including rests). If you are short on time, I highly recommend incorporating tabatas in your workout.

Are you eating differently?

With the pandemic not ending anytime soon, one area of our lives that has changed significantly is our nutrition. Whether you actively chose to do this or it was forced on you because of the pandemic, I am pretty sure you aren’t eating out as frequently as before as many restaurants are closed or have limited their menus. Is this the perfect time to reevaluate what you are eating?
We’ve known for many years that what you eat can impact your health and how much you exercise can impact how you feel so what is noticeable now is that people are realizing that home-cooked meals are best for them and I’m guessing you have also seen more people outside walking or running. Also, I bet you must have made something from scratch recently, right? Why? I think it is because not only do you have time but you also have the desire to devote the necessary energy to reevaluate your eating choices. Hopefully, as many of us reexamine the need for a good diet and exercise plan, we are able to determine that eating good food could possibly be the best medicine we need to fight off health concerns.

Don’t let your guard down!

How was your weekend? Did you run out for some errands? Grab some food? Wear a mask while doing any of these activities? Depending on where you live, I’m guessing your answer to the last question will be different.
Where I live, people clearly are back to normal. Dine in restaurants are packed, gyms are packed, kids baseball games are happening, and more, all with no mask! Shocking right? So is the pandemic over?
Absolutely not! There still is no vaccine or way to know if you are about to transmit so please don’t let your guard down and continue to wear your masks and gloves. Imagine how guilty you would feel if you passed on the virus to your loved ones!

#FF Microgreens

Do you know what microgreens are? They are part of the plant cycle-somewhere between seed and full-grown plants. Why is this important? Since many of us are staying or eating at home, gardens have grown in popularity—hydroponic or old-fashioned ones outside. Why? Because we realize that we can grow healthy food without being disrupted by the food supply.
Microgreens are about 1-3 inches tall and super packed with nutrients like iron, magnesium, zinc, and more depending on what you are eating. Next time you are out in the store, look for microgreens to give you that immense nutrient benefit along with more flavor (at least that’s what I have found).
The future is microgreen!

How is your eye health right now?

With a growing number of us working from home, one thing that is increasing is our exposure to blue light due to our increased screen time via phones, computers, TVs, and tablets. Even kids who are being schooled from home are now facing the same issue so what can you do about it? Before the pandemic had started, phones had started having digital well-being features but those are likely sky high right now and regardless, work still has to get done.
One area that will see an increase in demand is supplements for eye health because let’s face it no one eats enough carrots and other rainbow-colored veggies daily to reap their benefits. Some supplements that you will see take off include lutein, zeaxanthin, astaxanthin, and beta carotene. All of these are beneficial for your eyes due to their antioxidant properties. If you aren’t sure which to take, ask your doctor! Of course, if you don’t want another supplement to take, you could always try blue light glasses but my only advice right now for you is that to minimize your screen time (don’t look at your phone/tablet, etc 30 mins before sleeping) as you don’t want your eyes to suffer as you get older.

Is now the time to become a vegetarian?

If you have been reading my posts, you know that the world food supply is changing and with those changes comes decisions that we have to make for our families. For some it may be easier than others to reinvent their meals but all of us will be affected when the food supply changes. Small impacts in one region can have wide reaching impacts in other parts of the world. So what does this mean? Well, as a non-veg eater, 30% of the time, I know that I don’t rely on meats for my complete diet but I do rely on other produce that can be impacted due to the world conditions (coronavirus, pollination, weather, etc.) so what would I do if something that I truly enjoy is not available? Good question! I really don’t know because since I don’t rely on any one thing completely, I’m pretty sure that I could pivot and change my diet. Does that mean that now is the time to become a vegetarian? Maybe or maybe not. I used to be a vegetarian growing up and only started to eat chicken and turkey as I started working out but maybe now truly is the time to pivot back to being vegetarian since so many options are available.
What would you do if you had a difficult choice to make? Would you be able to become a vegetarian?

Protein powder booming?

Just a few days back, I had written about the possible meat shortage that is about to come and if you’ve seen the news lately, it looks like it will be around for awhile. With many meat plants closing due to workers having coronavirus, meat shortages are going to occur.
Stores have already started to limit purchase of meats to one or two but is that going to be enough to prevent price increases? Likely not! What about those of us who still workout, could you limit your protein intake. My prediction is that protein powder intake will increase as protein shortages surge. What do you think?
How are you going to cope with your protein shortage?
