  • Which supplement should I take? #Supplement Explorer

Are you always on your phone looking at which supplements you should take? Do you look at reviews? How do you decide what to buy?

As someone who has been in the nutraceutical industry for over 10 years, I’ve worked with many suppliers and companies to understand why an ingredient is chosen, what research is behind it, and how to sell it to a consumer, so if you are looking for some answers to questions you may have, drop a comment, or even better check out the Supplement Explorer on the site. It is free to use, 3 questions, and a simple output. No info is stored.

I made the Supplement Explorer purely for my use and then thought, well, if it is useful for me, maybe it is useful for others. The tool is not affiliated with any company or brand, but was just a way for me to showcase what I find useful. If you use it, do give me feedback as to what you’d like to see it on too.

Stay well and remember, before taking any supplements, check with your doctor if it is a good fit for you or not!

  • How do you relax?

    How do you relax?

After a long day at work or before an early start to the day, I find it best to relax at the beach. This is a little bit of downtime to just calm down before heading home or going in to work. It doesn’t have to be more than 5 mins as the point is to relax!

Find your relaxation place and take a moment to enjoy life around you and breathe! A healthy life can also be achieved by just taking five minutes to wind down!

  • Oh snap!

    Oh snap!

One of the new products that I’ve found and keep eating as a good go-to-snack is Oh Snap! Catchy name right?

What’s so good about it? Well, it is gluten free and nutritious! I mean, how can you mess up cucumbers, peas, and carrots? These are sold in the frozen section near other such snacks—I found mine at Target. I like them because they are low in carbs and taste good. They are packaged in a tear off type pouch and the veggie is in a brine solution (not added from the veggie itself) but surprisingly there isn’t much salt in them. There is some seasoning in it as well.

If you are looking for an easy snack to grab, this is a good one! My favorite was the spicy cucumber one and it sure had a kick too! So far, I haven’t found one that I don’t like so I’ll continue to keep buying this product!

  • Rainy day blues

    Rainy day blues

The weather in my area sure has been going back and forth between sun and rain. Something to be said for climate change right? It’s June here and the temperature is a cool 70F, where is summer?

Summer is the optimal time to maximize your exposure to the sun so you can up your Vitamin D3 levels but what do you do if it raining 3 or more times in the week?

In past, I’ve discussed about why vitamin D3 is beneficial from bone health to strong bones, but is there anything you can do aside from taking a supplement to up your D3 levels? Yes, you can increase your D3 levels by eating more fish like salmon, eat eggs, cheese, mushrooms, soy milk, and eat fortified foods but there truly is no substitute for sun exposure.

Tip: when buying Vit D3 supplements now, you might see the change from IU on the label to mcg so just check the %DV (% daily value) column to see how much vitamin D3 you are getting.

  • Old is gold

    Old is gold

With movies and TV being a great medium for product placement, is the time right to bring back old products regardless of whether they were successful or not?

Apparently, the answer is yes as New Coke is coming back from the dead. Why? It fits with the theme of Stranger Things on Netflix. The tie-in definitely makes sense considering the setting but has the audience for the product changed? Perhaps, a whole new generation will get to try it out, like me, and then we can decide if this truly limited run will stay that. A summer or two back, Crystal Pepsi came back and though it was a limited run, it still is available and is still clear and loaded with sugar.

I’m not sure who the market is for these relaunched products but after the initial euphoria of it coming back, do they really sustain sales? I guess after the new season of Stranger Things releases on July 4, we will see the success or failure of New Coke!

  • Using Alexa or Google home?

    Using Alexa or Google home?

Do you have at least one AI device like Alexa or Google home? What do you use it for? From asking the device to tell you about the weather to reminding you about your grocery list to making phone calls, these devices are great tools barring any privacy concerns that we keep hearing about but did you know that you can use these devices to learn about what you’re eating too.

My preferred tool for learning about food related topics is Google home as it uses Google to talk to you. For example, you can ask Google to tell you about the keto diet or what is the fat grams you should eat on the diet. You can also ask about what is the best cookie recipe on the keto diet or even where to buy keto products.

One of the best tools that I use is the ability to add items to a grocery list on the device which I can later pull up on my smartphone while shopping so as to make sure I get the healthy product I want and don’t leave empty handed when at the store. AI devices are definitely the way of the future and can be utilized to help you achieve your goals and if you’re using Google home hub with a screen then you can even watch workout videos via YouTube and keep moving while at home. The possibilities are endless as technology continues to evolve!

Year 1 Top Post: Myth or fact–Proteins

    upload.pngupload.png

No matter how often you go food shopping online or at the grocery store, one thing you will see in most products is how much protein is in it. This is a big attribute to highlight in the food industry because as more consumers become aware of how protein can keep you full longer, more are seeking a product that has it. However, there are still quite a few myths out there about proteins.

One such myth is there a limit to how much protein you can absorb. That probably is true but again as we know so far, what doesn’t get used up usually sits in your stomach so if you want to maximize protein consumption definitely exercise and choose a good diet so you aren’t overloaded with too much protein. What is too much protein? Totally depends on your lifestyle and health so best to speak with your doctor or nutritionist.

Another protein myth is that protein makes you bulky. I think that depends on your genetics as well as your lifestyle. Are you a competitive body builder or does your exercise program result in you bulking up are two questions that must be answered. If you are the average consumer looking to make healthier food choices with protein, then bulking is probably not going to be an issue.

Finally, the other one that I hear is that excess protein can damage your liver and kidneys. This one is probably true too but again all depends on the state of those organs prior to excess consumption. If you are eating healthy and exercising, you probably know what is best for your body so you can always tweak your balanced diet to help you achieve your goals.

If you are unsure about how much protein you really need, start with a Google search and learn about proteins and diets and speak with your doctor or nutritionist as they would be able to guide you in the right direction.

  • Year 1 Top Post: Oil/Butter/Coffee–sound appealing?

Year 1 Top Post: Oil/Butter/Coffee–sound appealing?

So you have been researching a lot about the keto diet on Google and you keep running into the terms bulletproof coffee or buttered coffee or one of its various names but what is it and can it keep you healthy?

A few years back before the Paleo diet took off, buttered coffee aka bulletproof coffee was the big rage for Paleo dieters. To make buttered coffee, you would add 1-2 Tbsp unsalted grass fed butter or ghee, 1 tsp-2 Tbsp MCT oil to your high quality coffee and use a handheld immersion blender to make this amazing frothy drink. Paleo dieters took this drink because it allowed for sustained energy release as the butter slowed down the absorption of caffeine and the MCT oil allowed for some of that brain boosting power along with appetite suppression and improved athletic performance too. Plus, you are still drinking coffee and reaping coffee’s antioxidant benefits! Does the choice of MCT oil matter? It could depending on the ratio of C8 and C10 fats in the oil but in taste you won’t see much of an impact. It is just that the higher the C8s (caprylic acid) tend to convert to ketones more efficiently than the C10s and C12s so definitely look for those MCT oils that have higher caprylic acids in them.  If you happen to be going through Whole Foods lately, you might see on their shelves a brand called BulletProof Coffee (BPC). This brand sells many items including ground coffee, collagen protein bars, MCT oil, and more. Like BPC, Nestle too is jumping into selling a version of buttered coffee so this trend is here to stay right?

Well, as consumers became more picky about what they eat and drink, bulletproof coffee definitely provides a healthier option as you are able to take in healthy fats and hopefully in turn reduce your carbohydrate intake so my guess is this trend is here to stay for now. Also, for the keto diet, this coffee is a great way to get in your fats and still keep carbs low.

By the way, if you’d like to try a cup of bulletproof coffee, just go to the WholeFoods coffee café and ask for a cup, they sell it. Currently, the most popular way to make this coffee is with ghee or unsalted grass fed butter, if you are adventurous, do try eggs instead as not only are eggs a good emulsifier but they extremely nutrient rich. You can add a teaspoon of sugar and pinch of salt as well and voila you have another amazing coffee drink! Or you could also add a scoop of collagen protein to this drink (grass fed butter way) and gain some of its benefits too but that’s a discussion for another time!

Year 1 Top Post: Healthy cookies? Whoa!

If you like eating cookies, Made Cookies are highly recommended. Not only are they delicious and soft and melt in your mouth but they are gluten free too! Usually, gluten free means that they don’t taste good but these are amazing. If I gave you two cookies side by side that were both soft baked and the same flavor, you definitely wouldn’t be able to tell them apart based on taste and looks.

The cookies are organic and made with whole grains and have about 13g carbs or 12g net carbs so not exactly keto friendly but you could still eat them on the keto diet without sacrificing all your carbs with this treat. The ingredients also show lots of vegetable extracts and powder so the nutrients are coming from them which is always a good thing, right? Finally, I also like that they are made in a nut-free facility so if you want to share your cookies with someone with a nut allergy, you can feel a little better about doing so.

Since I do have a wicked chocolate craving and sweet-tooth, the double chocolate flavor definitely appeals to me. Enjoy this sweet treat!
