  • Which supplement should I take? #Supplement Explorer

Are you always on your phone looking at which supplements you should take? Do you look at reviews? How do you decide what to buy?

As someone who has been in the nutraceutical industry for over 10 years, I’ve worked with many suppliers and companies to understand why an ingredient is chosen, what research is behind it, and how to sell it to a consumer, so if you are looking for some answers to questions you may have, drop a comment, or even better check out the Supplement Explorer on the site. It is free to use, 3 questions, and a simple output. No info is stored.

I made the Supplement Explorer purely for my use and then thought, well, if it is useful for me, maybe it is useful for others. The tool is not affiliated with any company or brand, but was just a way for me to showcase what I find useful. If you use it, do give me feedback as to what you’d like to see it on too.

Stay well and remember, before taking any supplements, check with your doctor if it is a good fit for you or not!

  • New product alert: siracha peas

    New product alert: siracha peas

If you’re into snacking like I am, then you’re always on the hunt for something to munch on that is healthy and can satisfy your needs for snacking. Do tend to try new products or stick with what you like and know? I’m always looking for something new so imagine my surprise when I picked up siracha peas as a snack.

Siracha peas are not only crunchy but also have 4g protein per 1/3 serving size. That’s a lot to eat so I usually mix them in with my peanuts and roasted chickpeas and boom, I have a munchable snack! Since peas are carbs with limited protein, I added peanuts and chickpeas into my mix to have satiety from fats and protein too. If you like siracha flavor and the taste of peas, do give these a try. You can find them at your fresh market.

    Stay well!

  • Breathing and your health

    Breathing and your health

Today I learned the importance of breathing properly and how it can significantly affect your health. I didn’t realize that perhaps breathing is what is causing my knee pain or back pain when I squat. How did I learn this today?

By chance, I went to a doctor’s office because after two years, this intermittent back pain was just not going away. Not sure why, I decided to meet with a new back pain doctor and what I learned was fascinating. I learned really quickly that when I inhale, I don’t inhale to my stomach which results in not stabilizing my core resulting in misalignment and stress on my knees and back and even feet. The nerves are connected right? So my homework is to exercise without including movements like the squat which could aggravate my back and knees by modifiy by squatting to a box or doing single leg squats. A simple visit to a doctor is perhaps all that I needed to learn about why my back want’t healing. Of course, my homework also includes learning to breathe all the way to my stomach. Hopefully, in a few weeks, I’ll be better.

Stay well and breathe all the way to your stomach!

  • Ready to travel?

    Ready to travel?

With summer in full swing and vacations underway, many people are hitting the road again. Driving to a destination is likely safer considering the pandemic but what if the driving distance is too far. What do you do? Are you ready to fly? Will you be comfortable wearing the mask on your flight? Is that trip so important that you must take it? Or would a staycation be better for you?

So many questions with so many different answers. My advice would be to drive if you are able to because at least you are confined to your own car because let’s face it with airlines now throwing out social distancing rules and booking all seats including middle ones, they are assuming the pandemic is over. Also, just because someone boards the flight with a mask on, doesn’t mean it stays on during it. Multiple images of people wearing the masks below the nose or under their chins are all over the internet so not exactly serving the purpose, right? Also, remember the air quality in a pressurized cabin isn’t great and the air recirculates hence the cross-contamination is easier. Even if you load up on your vitamins, I’m sure the risks are higher on a plane than a car currently—how the times have changed!

Make wise decisions so that you can enjoy your summer and stay well too!

  • Not Eating Out

    Not Eating Out

Even with the lockdown underway and the randomized way the States are opening up, one thing that has likely taken off is eating out or rather eating in via delivery from your favorite business. The good thing with this much consumption is you are supporting a business and helping people keep their jobs, but the downside is your waist is likely growing too. What can you do about it?

I tried an experiment where no food from outside was consumed for a week and you know what? In one week, I could feel less lethargic and had more pip in my step. Why? Well, forced to eat at home, I was carefully choosing better options to eat and not temporarily being satisfied by outside food. It was harder to meet my macros this week but you know what overall I was happy I did it because it was kind of like a cleanse without the cleanse powders. I also increased my water intake to help drive out more toxins from my body so overall I think that this week was a good experiment and I’ll likely continue eating this way because no food is better than home-cooked!

    Stay well!

    Product Alert: Daiya’s Alternative yogurt

If you have allergies to milk perhaps you have a hard time digesting yogurt. I like to try new products and one that I found that tastes great is Daiya’s alternative yogurt which is made with coconut cream. Let’s cut to the chase, you want to know does it taste good? Well, if you like coconut products, I’m pretty sure you will like this too. It comes in several flavors, is low in sugar, and tastes great. It does have protein in it but not as much as say a Greek yogurt but you are able to enjoy yogurt again, right? Keep in mind that this yogurt is gluten free and dairy free so if you are seeking a product that meets those criteria, check it out. I can’t wait until they start selling these in 100 calories packs but for now you have to buy them individually and typically one serving has 160 calories so it is a nice afternoon or night time snack/dessert!

    Stay well!

  • Diet and Urine analysis

    Diet and Urine analysis

Recently, I read an article about how a new urine test is being developed by a university to test if our diets can be influenced by our test results. You’re probably wondering isn’t that already available in terms of tests like EverlyWell? I don’t think what this test is doing and what others are doing the same because one is measuring your actual urine to detail what you should or should not eat while another is telling you which foods you are sensitive to whether it is via blood, swab, or something else.

Depending on whether you choose this new test or go with an existing test, the goal of both is to provide you information to improve your health. I personally think these tests are in the infancy stage and will require more development to provide actual useful info but remember that takes time and research. I think the industry is headed in the right direction but I’m not sure how reliable the data is other than the fact that it gives you an indication of what is good for you or not. Do you agree?

    Stay well!

  • Need a book to read?

    Need a book to read?

A new book that I recommend to read is Deep Work by Cal Newport. What makes it good is that there are many actionable items from it. As we know multitasking is not efficient and this book mentions that and why it is so; so those of us who are constantly multitasking and failing to accomplish a task, know that there might be some truth to this. Other good points covered include how connected are you to the world? Is that distracting you from accomplishing your goals? Are you always attached to your device? We all are but is it too much that is the question. Finally, various tools are provided on how to concentrate at your work, should you block time a day, limit email checks, seclude yourself, etc. are all valuable ideas that one can implement. If you like to read and want to concentrate and focus at your work and on your work, this might be a good book for you to check out.

    Stay well!
