Which supplement should I take? #Supplement Explorer
Are you always on your phone looking at which supplements you should take? Do you look at reviews? How do you decide what to buy?
As someone who has been in the nutraceutical industry for over 10 years, I’ve worked with many suppliers and companies to understand why an ingredient is chosen, what research is behind it, and how to sell it to a consumer, so if you are looking for some answers to questions you may have, drop a comment, or even better check out the Supplement Explorer on the site. It is free to use, 3 questions, and a simple output. No info is stored.I made the Supplement Explorer purely for my use and then thought, well, if it is useful for me, maybe it is useful for others. The tool is not affiliated with any company or brand, but was just a way for me to showcase what I find useful. If you use it, do give me feedback as to what you’d like to see it on too.
Stay well and remember, before taking any supplements, check with your doctor if it is a good fit for you or not!

Over-sized and ready to eat?

Have you gone to the grocery store and looked at shiny fruit and even over-sized fruit? Does that influence your decision to buy the fruit? If you look at the pic with this post, you’ll see that the Honeycrisp apple is as large or larger than the cup–by the way, notice the Friends mug, another one of my favorites. Is that normal? Should the apple be that big? What does it tell you about the fruit?
If you grow your own fruits in a garden without chemicals typically very few items grow to absurd sizes but some do like watermelons and pumpkins but would you grow such an apple? The only advice I would give to you is to buy it if the shininess and size appeal to you but sometimes smaller sizes are sweeter and tastier. Remember, there is a huge microgreens market today those are tiny plants versus the larger ones that yield more but may not have as many nutrients (vitamins and minerals). Don’t be fooled by the size of the fruit as larger doesn’t indicate more nutrients necessarily!

Do you garden?

With the pandemic underway, one thing that I see more people doing is growing their own food. Good or bad? It depends on whether you like gardening and eating fresh veggies and fruits.. Another factor that is important to consider is do you have the space and time to maintain a garden because you might have a green thumb but you won’t know it until you give your garden some attention.
My favorite part of gardening is that I put in the effort and soon I’ll get fresh produce to eat. Saves me a trip to the grocery store and I know exactly where it came from. I typically like to grow cilantro, spicy peppers, and tomatoes but watermelons are in my garden too. If you live in a state that allows free soil testing, take advantage of it because that will tell you how much nitrogen/phosphorus, etc. you might need. If you don’t want something high maintenance look into an aero-garden. The benefits of gardening are many and many things can be grown in the winter too so don’t think of this as a summer activity only.

New Product Alert: OWYN Meal Replacement

Recently, I upped my intake of protein as I noticed that I was falling short, thanks to tracking via My Fitness Pal. Luckily, I love drinking the OWYN shakes so to my surprise I found that they had a one that was a meal replacement. It comes in two flavors but I preferred the chai one. So how did it taste? What did it cost?
Let’s start with the taste, I enjoyed both versions but really enjoyed the chai one. The earthy taste was nice without being too strong. Plus, the boost of protein and satiety that I got was great. I wouldn’t recommend drinking this after working out because it felt too heavy in my stomach but that’s what you get when you have a meal replacement. I paid $12 for 4 bottles so about $3/bottle, not too bad. Would I buy it again? Of course, I totally feel like I’m drinking something healthy and good for me.

Stretching

Sometimes you learn what you need only after you are in pain or forced to realize that something needs to change. So what does this have to do with stretching? Well, I bet like many of you who exercise, you probably skip out on mobilizing before and after working out because that isn’t too fun or takes time. Yup, I know the excuses but you know what as you get older those non-fun activities are likely what is going to allow you to continue to exercise without pain. How do I know? Well, having sporadic mid-back pain was one way my body was telling me you need to change something.
Changing what I did was difficult because I didn’t know what caused the pain in the first place. Could it be my workouts or sleeping on a bad mattress or did I just need to see a chiropractor and go to physical therapy? Well, I did the latter and switched the mattress but the pain kept returning. Finally, I was about to give up and went to a sports chiropractor found out that my lack of stretching was the reason I wasn’t squatting well and my mid-back was in pain. Some simple stretching exercises were recommended and within two weeks I saw a significant improvement. Does this mean that your pain will go away too if you stretch? Not sure because you likely need to speak with your doctor but stretching and yoga are beneficial to me so I’m going to stick with it.

Deceived by the camera

One of the best way to keep track of your progress is via pics. However, did you know more people rely on their weighing scale than anything else? That’s totally deceptive because you won’t see daily weight change that is dramatic but are pics any less deceptive?
Before and after pics can totally be manipulated and so if you’re looking for some fast progress like shown in before and after pics, make sure you are trusting reliable sources and genuine people and look for dates in the pic via handwritten or newspaper issue. We all want to look the best we can so make sure you take progress pics at set intervals and don’t look at the internet pics to justify that it can be done. It can be done but at your pace!

Macro talk

Measuring your food and tracking your food is usually a good habit when you’re trying to achieve your goals but what exactly are you measuring? Can that impact your achieving your goals? Yes!
Macros are protein, carbs, and fats but if you use an app like My Fitness Pal then you might track calories or cholesterol or sodium etc. Obviously depending on your goals these might be important but for most they are likely looking at calories or their protein/fat/carb intake. What’s important to remember that the quality of these and not the quantity makes a huge difference while macros are tied to calories too.
Quick takeaways are protein is for muscle building and repair, carbs are for energy, and fats are for insulation of your organs and bones—keep in mind this is a very abbreviated description so ask your nutritionist for more details. Another good takeaway is carbs and protein give 4 calories per gram while fats give 9 calories per gram! Using this info and with your doctor or nutritionist’s input, you can likely create a diet that reflects your goals.

Cinnamon roll indulgence

This week, no matter all the good and healthy eating that I do and write about, it all went out the door when I had my cinnamon rolls that were made at home. Why? How? Worth it?
So what started my derailment was an ad on tv showing cinnabons. You’re like that’s all it took? Yup, perhaps like others, I too got brainwashed by the ads and succumbed to it. Usually, I have good willpower but not this time so was it worth it? 140 calories per roll, not too bad! Yes, I don’t indulge too much and once in awhile it is ok to overindulge as long as you get back on track which I did next day with exercise and good eating. The lesson here is to not beat yourself up about it!
