  • Which supplement should I take? #Supplement Explorer

Are you always on your phone looking at which supplements you should take? Do you look at reviews? How do you decide what to buy?

As someone who has been in the nutraceutical industry for over 10 years, I’ve worked with many suppliers and companies to understand why an ingredient is chosen, what research is behind it, and how to sell it to a consumer, so if you are looking for some answers to questions you may have, drop a comment, or even better check out the Supplement Explorer on the site. It is free to use, 3 questions, and a simple output. No info is stored.

I made the Supplement Explorer purely for my use and then thought, well, if it is useful for me, maybe it is useful for others. The tool is not affiliated with any company or brand, but was just a way for me to showcase what I find useful. If you use it, do give me feedback as to what you’d like to see it on too.

Stay well and remember, before taking any supplements, check with your doctor if it is a good fit for you or not!

  • Black Friday Shopping

    Black Friday Shopping

With the pandemic still underway, Black Friday shopping will be different this year but not so different at the same time. We’ll still be struggling with eating too much on Thanksgiving and figuring out how to eat all the leftovers. Here are some quick tips to help you get through the day:

    • Consider a 10 min walk while at home after enjoying your leftovers

    • While shopping, consider low-calorie drinks like water, unsweetened tea, or hot black coffee, all depending on what you enjoy

    • Don’t spend all your money on Black Friday, there might be better deals on Cyber Monday

    • Go to the gym at some point in the day if you can, you might feel better

    • Don’t stress as this is just the beginning of the holiday season!

    Stay well!

  • Kind Bar and Snickers! What do they have in common?

Kind Bar and Snickers! What do they have in common?

One product that I love eating is Kind bars. Not only are there so many choices in flavors and taste but they also have protein, 12g at times. I also like the ease of finding them in most places including Target and airports! However, did you know that the company that owns Snickers candy is now about to acquire Kind? Does that surprise you? To me, not so much because every company wants something healthy in their portfolio but I hope they don’t switch up the clean label ingredients that make up Kind bars. I do enjoy Snickers so that being said if they could make a healthy version of Snickers, then I’m all for it!

  • New Product Alert: Well Yes! Soup

New Product Alert: Well Yes! Soup

One of my favorite new fall staples is Well Yes! Soup. It is so yummy and full of healthy vegetables and nutrients. I really enjoy it especially during this on and off cold weather. It makes a great quick lunch. Pour out of the can, heat for a few mins and it is good to go. Plus, only 36g carbs in the whole can! Whoa! Add to it 13g protein and you’ve got a pretty nice meal. The flavor that I enjoy is the hearty lentil vegetable one. It doesn’t list any wheat ingredients but it also doesn’t claim to be gluten free so if that’s important, do check the label. Price wise, I bought it at target for 1.99 so not too bad. I also pair it with a side salad and I’ve got an enjoyable meal.

As the holidays approach, staying on a healthy diet is important and even more difficult with all the awesome holiday foods so if one substitution like this soup can help, I’m all for it! If you try the soup, let me know how you like it!

    Stay well!

#FF What did you miss this week?

This week we learned about the need to continue to wear that mask, proteins, aminos, and sugar. Missed something? Check out these posts:

  • Sugar season is here!

    Sugar season is here!

So you thought you survived Halloween and sugar season? Well, Thanksgiving and Christmas are just as ripe for sugar invasion. From pumpkin pie to sweet potato casserole, all staples of holiday dinner are soon to be on your table but don’t fret, there is a way to enjoy and not over consume!

Sugar is in everything that we tend to buy. Can you have your daily coffee without sugar? For some it is hard to do while others can gradually remove it but the success of sugar reduction in your daily diet is totally dependent on what your goal is. From keto to crossfit to bodybuilding to track to yoga, all fitness means that vary in their daily nutrition requirement but all with a commonality—best results are achieved with a healthy diet so limit those serving sizes and still enjoy your favorite holiday treats.

There are plenty of great documentaries on sugar on Netflix so I encourage you to check them out and figure out if what they are saying makes sense for you and your lifestyle but if you are trying to limit sugar, there are options to help you do that. I’m sure you have heard of an insulin spike or sugar rush after consuming sugar so going cold turkey for many will be tough. If you have a sugar craving (perhaps that mid-afternoon slump), try grabbing a piece of 80% or more dark chocolate as not only are you getting to eat chocolate but it is bitter enough that you won’t indulge in the whole bar. You could also grab some nuts like almonds or guacamole as both are fats that will keep you full longer and you’ll reap the many nutritional benefits of them too. Other options include eating more veggies throughout the day so you’ll stay full longer or turn to berries as they have natural sugars that will quench your sugar craving.

If you want to reduce the chances of weight gain, lower testosterone, fatigue, mood swings, and headaches, you’ll want to consider eating healthier and exercising with tackling sugar intake being just one of the many ways to lead your best life yet!

I’m all about enjoying the holidays but don’t let a cheat meal become a cheat week because all that hard work you have put in may go away and you’ll have to start with a few steps back. I guess it all depends on how you feel in the moment and during the holidays!

    Stay well!

  • Aminos and Protein

    Aminos and Protein

Yesterday, I wrote about arginine, an amino acid but what does that have to do with proteins. Amino acids make up proteins so they are the building blocks of a protein molecule. Now that we know that, how much protein should we be consuming? There is no clear cut answer on this but read on to find out why.

Is there a limit to how much protein you can absorb? What we know so far, what doesn’t get used up usually sits in your stomach so if you want to maximize protein consumption definitely exercise and choose a good diet so you aren’t overloaded with too much protein. What is too much protein? Totally depends on your lifestyle and health so best to speak with your doctor or nutritionist.

Another protein myth is that protein makes you bulky. I think that depends on your genetics as well as your lifestyle. Are you a competitive bodybuilder or does your exercise program result in you bulking up are two questions that must be answered? If you are the average consumer looking to make healthier food choices with protein, then bulking is probably not going to be an issue.

Finally, the other one that I hear is that excess protein can damage your liver and kidneys. This one is probably true too but again all depends on the state of those organs prior to excess consumption. If you are eating healthy and exercising, you probably know what is best for your body so you can always tweak your balanced diet to help you achieve your goals.

If you are unsure about how much protein you really need, start with a Google search and learn about proteins and diets and speak with your doctor or nutritionist as they would be able to guide you in the right direction.

    Stay well!

  • Arginine

    Arginine

This week I bought an arginine supplement bottle. Why? Well arginine is supplement that can help you get a pump while you workout but that’s not the reason that I bought it. Arginine is an amino acid so it can help with muscle building but also because it can help with improved blood flow. Unsure if arginine is for you or how much to take, ask you doctor!

Where can you find arginine in foods? Typically, you can find it in nuts, seeds, meats like turkey and chicken, and chickpeas. Like most people, I don’t eat enough of any of these items daily or consistently so it is good to know for me that a supplement is within reach. Since I just started taking it, I don’t know if it is working yet or not but remember everyone’s body composition is different so check with your doctor before consuming it.

    Stay well!
