  • Which supplement should I take? #Supplement Explorer

Are you always on your phone looking at which supplements you should take? Do you look at reviews? How do you decide what to buy?

As someone who has been in the nutraceutical industry for over 10 years, I’ve worked with many suppliers and companies to understand why an ingredient is chosen, what research is behind it, and how to sell it to a consumer, so if you are looking for some answers to questions you may have, drop a comment, or even better check out the Supplement Explorer on the site. It is free to use, 3 questions, and a simple output. No info is stored.

I made the Supplement Explorer purely for my use and then thought, well, if it is useful for me, maybe it is useful for others. The tool is not affiliated with any company or brand, but was just a way for me to showcase what I find useful. If you use it, do give me feedback as to what you’d like to see it on too.

Stay well and remember, before taking any supplements, check with your doctor if it is a good fit for you or not!

  • Want more info on what you are eating?

Want more info on what you are eating?

I’m sure most of us who buy a food item, in a can or package, at least look at the package to make sure we are picking up what it is that we want. Some of us go a step further and look at the calories and macros while others of us want even more info like what does this ingredient do or is the food item GMO, kosher, etc. but how can food manufacturers help you learn more? QR codes are the answer.

Smart labels are definitely on the rise but I want to see is that there should eventually be nothing but the product name and pic on the package followed by a truly interactive label. QR codes are a good step in the right direction but unless all packages do something like the aforementioned packaging option, why would a consumer take out their phone to scan a QR code because the relevant info is already there on the package.

Another important question to ask is are consumers really interested in learning more about a product or do they just care about the price point and is it healthy? Should a company invest so much into a QR code for a small percentage of the shoppers? Until the discussion of what is healthy and how to get healthy food to those who want it at an affordable price is resolved, I feel QR codes and smart labeling is just a small step for creating awareness about a product in the consumer’s mind.

  • I Want It Now!

    I Want It Now!

Today, with technology permeating most of our lives, we are all used to getting something fast. For some even 2-day Amazon prime delivery is too long a wait and hence Amazon has introduced one-day delivery and same delivery depending on where you live. Why are we becoming consumers that need instant gratification?

The best example of instant gratification is if you eat fast food. Nothing comes quicker and cheaper than fast food but at what cost, your health? Supplement purchases are also being made due to the instant gratification that we seek. I don’t feel well so by taking a few days of Vitamin C or CBD oil, my ailments will disappear? True? Highly unlikely. Remember, mom’s good old saying that if it seems too good to be true, it likely is.

Health and wellness are parts of life that can be enhanced by products and items you purchase but those products cannot provide instant gratification. Why? Your body chemistry is changing daily and that is based on many environmental factors including what you ate that particular day. Hence, a typical rule of thumb to see if a product is working for you is to use it at least one month or more. If you don’t see an improvement, it could be due to the supplement not working or other lifestyle factors but only you would know which case it is. Nothing works overnight so any supplement or product that says see results in one week or drop 20 pounds in one week by taking this product, probably isn’t going to help you.

Your best friend today is indeed technology. You can always look up via Google or various company sites if the product hold up to what it claims as well as learn about the company’s practices. Good companies tend to want to share and be transparent with the consumer so do your research and your journey to a healthy and well life will be easier.

  • Do you prefer food delivery?

    Do you prefer food delivery?

We all have been in a bind at times and sometimes need food delivered to us rather than us go out to go get it. If you are lucky enough to have Uber Eats or Doordash or Grubhub in your town than you might be using these services to get your food but be careful how often you use them, why?

All these food delivery services are great but don’t forget you are truly paying for convenience. When these services started out, you only paid for the meal, delivery fee, and tip. Now, there is a service fee and small order fee too. Plus these fees range from $2.99 to 7.99! So your $7 meal could end up costing you $20! Insane prices to pay for convenience, right?

The only way that I’m ok with paying these prices is 1) if the food I’m getting is coming from somewhere far from me, 2) the food is good, 3) the service is good and 4) the food is healthy. Yes, these are great things to consider when ordering the food but if you need to convince yourself the fees are worth it, hopefully, the meals are feeding a family instead of just one person otherwise other meal prep services and kits are properly better for an individual.

Eat well and be healthy but save your money too if you can!

  • Meal kits

    Meal kits

I want to try a meal kit but I’m not sure if it is right for me? Ever thought this..no matter your reason for choosing a meal kit or food prep service, there are lots of choices..read on to learn more.

I’m sure you all have seen and heard ads for various meal services like Blue Apron, Hello Fresh, and Peapod to those that offer fully prepared meals like Ice Age Meals, Factor 75, and Kettlebell Kitchen. You can even go to Shoprite and have your them do your shopping for you so that all you have to do is pick up the groceries.

Today, there numerous services propping up to deliver to you anything you want from pet treats to clothing to cosmetics so much online delivery is available that you can technically never step into a store again! The cost of all these delivery services is definitely dependent on what you are purchasing. For example, you can shop via Google Express and select products from various stores like Target/Costco (even without a membership)/Whole foods and you can get free shipping for over $35 usually. Or you can shop at Boxed.com and never ever have to go to a club store or pay a membership fee and have bulk items delivered to you. Each option is supposed to provide you convenience but like shopping with Amazon, all these services have a ton of waste in terms of packaging so if you are environmentally conscious, keep that mind.

Looking for recommendations on a online service ask me, I’ve tried several—each one has its own value. Customizing all these food delivery kits is also great especially if you want to eat gluten free, paleo, keto, or vegetarian. Lots of choices are out there so definitely research which fits your lifestyle the best.

  • Meal Prep Option

    Meal Prep Option

With so many options as to which meal delivery service to try and I mean, the fully cooked meals, one that stood out for me is Daily Harvest!

Depending on the plan and the frequency you choose, one cup is between $6.99 to 7.75 per cup! I’m sure you’re skeptical looking at the pic below, don’t worry it is filling and every cup has fresh ingredients like fruits and veggies. The cups arrive frozen via dry ice and definitely go straight into the freezer once you get home.

The cups can be searched for on their website based on any dietary restrictions you may have so if you want something that is keto, it is there and if you want something paleo, that’s there too.

Another thing that I like about these cups is they are so easy to make, no matter which you take from smoothies to lattes to soups to rice. Just add water and heat in microwave or blend.  Max 4 mins and you’re eating a healthy meal on your busy day.

The only negative for me is that they don’t have a lot of protein so if you’re eating this after working out, you’ll need to add some chicken or eggs to it but even that isn’t too much cooking so to speak.

I currently get the 12 meal plan and have it delivered weekly which is great because I’m always eating healthy and the results are noticeable when I workout!

  • Smoothie on-the-go

    Smoothie on-the-go

Smoothies by their nature are meant to be easy and convenient beverages to go but even those when bought outside rather than making at home, could make you gain weight due to the added sugar. So what can you do if you don’t have time to buy the juices, veggies, fruits, and blend it all together? You look for options like the one shown here.

I like this powerful smoothie drink to have after a workout because it has 20g protein and is ready to go. It also doesn’t have a high amount of sugar or carbs plus it’s got Greek yogurt so lots of gut health help too. This is definitely is not something that replaces my protein shake but it does provide a break from the routine. I could also use this as a midmorning or mid-afternoon snack too. If you’d like something healthy to drink instead of coffee, give this smoothie a shot!

  • Protein & Kind Bar

    Protein & Kind Bar

I’m all for snacking and on the go convenience but so much out there is sold under the premise of healthy because it has protein in it or is low calorie but there is more to making something healthy which we all know by now, especially if you’ve been reading my posts.

That brings me to a brand that I keep going back to–Kind. Kind products are tasty and have ingredients that I like and when I eat them, I don’t feel like I just ate just sugar.

If you want to try a bar, do give Kind bars a shot. Remember, just cause something has protein doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a ton of sugar so look at that too before buying; that being said, these bars are not high sugar and provide you just the right amount of satisfaction and healthy nutrients that you seek.

  • Beet power!

    Beet power!

As you know, I’m a huge fan of beets! What for? Their natural nitrate, energy boosting effect. When I started the blog, I had mentioned Love Beets’ juice which you could buy at Wholefoods but today I’ll tell you about their new product–powdered beets!

You’re probably wondering why buy the powdered version? One, it still is just beets and nothing else. Two, it’s easy to travel with. Three, it’s good to mix in a smoothie without worrying about making a mess with the liquid version. Finally, did I mention this already? it’s still beets so you get all the nutritional benefits!

    Get yours today at Target!

  • Epic Bar

    Epic Bar

You’ve probably seen Epic Bars in Wholefoods or Target but most likely they were for the original products like chicken, beef, or venison bars; however, did you know they have other bars too?

I was surprised when I found a peanut butter bar from them. I really liked this option as an alternative to Larabar or Clif bars so gave it a try.

Though I liked the simple ingredients in the bar and it gave me the impression of eating something healthy with protein, what I didn’t like was how much it stuck in my teeth thanks to the dates in it. Not a fan of the texture, sticky, either. Will I be buying it again? Unlikely but I like to try stuff so I’m glad I got to try another Epic product.
