Which supplement should I take? #Supplement Explorer
Are you always on your phone looking at which supplements you should take? Do you look at reviews? How do you decide what to buy?
As someone who has been in the nutraceutical industry for over 10 years, I’ve worked with many suppliers and companies to understand why an ingredient is chosen, what research is behind it, and how to sell it to a consumer, so if you are looking for some answers to questions you may have, drop a comment, or even better check out the Supplement Explorer on the site. It is free to use, 3 questions, and a simple output. No info is stored.I made the Supplement Explorer purely for my use and then thought, well, if it is useful for me, maybe it is useful for others. The tool is not affiliated with any company or brand, but was just a way for me to showcase what I find useful. If you use it, do give me feedback as to what you’d like to see it on too.
Stay well and remember, before taking any supplements, check with your doctor if it is a good fit for you or not!

Bear Naked Granola

I’ve tried many types of granola brands and one of my favorite ones is Bear Naked. What do I like about them?
Not only does it taste great but it also has simple ingredients. My favorite is the energy type. It has the right amount of sweetness with the salty. I add a dash to my Greek yogurt snack and I’ve got a healthy, satiating snack.
You can buy the Bear Naked product line at Target for about $3-4. Not a bad price point for the amount you get. Do give it a try if you like granola.

Pumpkin Spice Season

With summer winding down, you probably are thinking about back to school stuff, tax free shopping days, buying some fall clothes, putting away summer clothes, or even making a few more trips to the beach but I doubt you are thinking about pumpkin spice lattes and etc. Well, it seems like fall flavors are coming back earlier and earlier each year. This year, Starbucks already launched its Pumpkin Spice Creamer that you can buy at the grocery store for about $5!
Don’t get me wrong, I love pumpkin spice season but that flavor is definitely fall weather stuff as it is still 80F outside and the only thing that I want to drink right now is something cold! Marketing and companies know that people crave new items and why not bring back the familiar earlier but is there such a thing as too early? The upside is that the flavor is not available as a drink yet at Starbucks so you will just have to make do with the creamer!
Cheers to summer and pumpkin spice season!

Mockamole–Have you had it?

So I went to this restaurant the other day and there was a note saying that due to the avocado shortage, they are unable to provide guacamole. I asked the waiter what else they could serve in place of it and he said that the kitchen can serve something that is called a mockamole. What is a mockamole?
To my surprise mockamole was a green concoction but was it? It was made of kale, broccoli, peas, and peppers. It was pretty good but definitely not guacamole! Though I got a healthy dose of green and nutrients, with the price of avocados going up and also their shortage, don’t be surprised if your favorite avocado dish is now substituted with this mockamole creation!
Enjoy your mockamole!

Ice Cream!

When you think of summer, you think of the sun, the beach, watermelon, and of course, ice cream, right?!
Now, what if I told you that ice cream is becoming healthy? Whoa? How? Ice cream manufacturers are trying to grab on to the clean label trend by giving you plant-based ice creams like avocado and broccoli and so on but is there a real market for this, I wonder?
If you think kids are going to eat it because you have a strawberry ice cream (that is actually made from beets) and that they won’t notice it, then that ice cream is either tasting phenomenal or it will be discarded by the child. Adults know better but if you are eating clean 80-90% of the time, shouldn’t normal ice cream by itself be a good indulgence for you?
To me, unless the flavor profile is as good as regular ice cream, I can’t imagine going for a plant-based ice cream only to say that I ate healthy ice cream!

Alternative Meat: Warning

With the growing number of restaurants selling alternative meats like Impossible Burger and Beyond Meat, one thing you should be aware of is that though they are better in terms of sustainability, do you know how it is cooked at the restaurant? If you are vegan or vegetarian, proceed with caution.
Most restaurants will likely use the same oil and grill to make the alternative meat burger as the beef burger. If you are a beef burger eater, this won’t matter much but if you are vegan or vegetarian make sure you ask them to cook the patty separately and away from the beef products. Since I don’t eat beef, I have to ask for this to happen. How do I know that this has been done? I don’t but I’m hoping the restaurant cares about me as a customer and will do that for me.
Next time you’re out, ask the restaurant how they cook their beef and alternative meat burgers as that may sway your decision as to what to eat!

Progress

We often measure progress by what we see in the mirror or what others see and complement or maybe even give a back-handed compliment but progress is nonetheless happening daily.
When you are working out and eating right, you may not see results daily and you may feel like why am I going to the gym or eating this way or giving up things that I like but what you have to remember is that change comes slowly and nothing happens overnight, no matter how much we wish it did. If you need that boost of self-confidence, talk to someone who hasn’t seen you in a few months as I’m sure they’ll be the ones to notice any changes.
Another way to see your progress is by taking before and after pics as you’ll be surprised by the differences. I don’t recommend weighing yourself too often because even if the scale isn’t changing maybe your body composition is and maybe muscle is being built so the scale number might not change. Another good way to assess your progress is do you fit into a different size of pant? That’s as telling as it needs to be because if you have dropped pant sizes or gone up a few, nothing will more clearly tell you your results. Finally, progress can also be measured by how you feel? With this new diet/exercise plan, are you more energetic? sleeping better? Sometimes its not the numbers but the energy level that tells us how we are doing.
Don’t feel down if you aren’t see rapid progress, results take time!

Increase my energy!

Are you feeling tired and need more energy so you grab an energy drink? Does that jolt give you what you seek and then an hour later, you feel a crash?
You can avoid relying on an energy drink by…wait for it…eating! You don’t have to rely on B vitamins for energy or other items like such if you eat the rainbow color of foods…red bell peppers to spinach to pineapples to more. Simply adding these type of items may help you get more energy!

Grow your food

Yesterday, I gave you a reminder about investing for your health but what if you truly can’t afford to buy healthier?
One of the simplest things you can do is grow your own veggies and fruits. Get a pot, seeds, and water it! Bam! You’ve grown some healthy items that you can enjoy at meal time.
Remember, gardens don’t have to be complicated and even if you aren’t successful the first time, don’t give up! Sometimes you just need to figure it out first and then second times the charm!

Reminder

Sometimes you just need a reminder that your health is a long term investment, not a quick fix and cumbersome expense!
We often complain about the price of buying healthy items but if you remember the above, you’ll be shifting your mindset and therefore you’ll likely achieve your goals!
