Which supplement should I take? #Supplement Explorer
Are you always on your phone looking at which supplements you should take? Do you look at reviews? How do you decide what to buy?
As someone who has been in the nutraceutical industry for over 10 years, I’ve worked with many suppliers and companies to understand why an ingredient is chosen, what research is behind it, and how to sell it to a consumer, so if you are looking for some answers to questions you may have, drop a comment, or even better check out the Supplement Explorer on the site. It is free to use, 3 questions, and a simple output. No info is stored.I made the Supplement Explorer purely for my use and then thought, well, if it is useful for me, maybe it is useful for others. The tool is not affiliated with any company or brand, but was just a way for me to showcase what I find useful. If you use it, do give me feedback as to what you’d like to see it on too.
Stay well and remember, before taking any supplements, check with your doctor if it is a good fit for you or not!

Spring season

With daylight savings time beginning this weekend, lots of things are about to change for a lot of people. This week, I’ll talk about what those things are.
Let’s start with the sleep pattern. If you’re anything like me, then spring forward means you’ll be up longer at night because you can’t sleep. Your body will need a few days to adjust to this new schedule—think like you just traveled and had a change in time zone.
So what can you do to mitigate against lack of sleep? For me, it’s staying up longer and eventually my sleep pattern will adjust but that’s not practical for others so maybe you can try an activity that exhausts you or perhaps take melatonin if that helps you and is doctor approved for you or perhaps just count sheep–okay, not serious on the last one—but you get my drift.
Try to get some sleep otherwise it’ll be a long week, thanks to daylight savings time.

#Coronavirus Tip!

Another helpful tip to protect yourself from the coronavirus, but an extremely hard one too abide by is to not touch your face! Why? Well, humans tend to touch their face at least 20 times a day, be it rubbing your eyes or blowing your nose or putting on chapstick, we touch our face. So does this advice make sense? Yes, remember the skin is our largest organ and it can absorb many germs so with good hand washing and not touching your face, you may be able to limit your exposure…but not touching your face is going to be tough, no doubt!

#Coronavirus tip

A really good tip that I think more companies and cities are enforcing is to avoid crowds so that you don’t get exposure from those who are infected (both with those who have symptoms or don’t show any as well). I think this will definitely be a game changer until we know how long this flu lasts, does it disappear when summer is here, or is it a recurring event every year. No matter what, stay safe and wash your hands!

Is it possible to the avoid the #coronavirus?

Yesterday, I shared an infographic about masks and what they do as people are turning to them in this time of coronavirus global pandemic but is there a better way?
The likely most efficient preventive method is to wash your hands a lot! Don’t sneeze into your hands and then touch something or shake hands. Even if there was a vaccine, would you take it? Be honest. Did you take the flu vaccine? The way you answer that is going to tell you how likely you are to take the vaccine.
We aren’t likely to avoid work, gyms, concerts, so if you can reduce your chances of contraction buy washing your hands more, might as well do that!
Note: I’m not a doctor but a scientist so even in normal lab practice, we are encouraged to wash our hands so I thought that advice is good outside the lab too!

Should you use a mask? #coronavirus

I found this great infographic that explains the difference between two masks and their purpose. Do check them out and then decide if you need a mask to prevent getting the coronavirus.
This infographic was tweeted out by Dr Sanjay Gupta of CNN.

Friday fun #ff

I’m going to start a weekly Friday fun thought that I find relevant to share; hopefully you’ll enjoy this new Friday topic.
Today’s Friday fun #ff:
Did you know that companies that are differentiating themselves with packaging, like compostable bottles, will tend to be the influencers of tomorrow who will get gobbled up by corporate America so that those bigger companies can innovate faster!

Eating local is good right?

Eating local is so important to support your local community and small business but does it really make a difference in terms of carbon footprint?
Depending on who you talk to, the answer can be yes or no. If you think transportation and retail packaging are going to be driven down you are impacting the environment in a positive way, then yes. However, what if the impact was more from what you ate rather than where it came from. Think about this, a plant-based diet (fruits and veggies) is better for the environment than an animal-based one because you aren’t killing animals for food and thus no dictating the need to mass production of animals like chicken and turkey. The answer isn’t as simple as shopping local when impacting the carbon footprint but your viewpoint as to how to impact it can also drive your purchase decisions.
Eating local is good right? All depends on what you believe is the right way to impact the environment.

Does that side ruin your healthy food?

Eating healthy while traveling or doing work lunches or dinner is extremely difficult for several reason. You can’t count your macros or take your food with you to these events so what do you do? You opt for the healthiest option on the menu and hope it delivers. One thing that I thing gets most people is the sides they choose with that healthy meal. Do you load up with fries as your entree is healthy or do you stick with veggies as the side? Tough decision, right?
My personal way of looking at this scenario is if the entree is huge and super healthy, I’ll eat that with a side of french fries or a slice of bread but nothing too excessive. You don’t want to blow your whole diet over that side so I typically choose something that makes me happy to eat it and is not excessive in size either. Is that the right decision for you? Perhaps or maybe not but you have to decide based on how strictly you have adhered to your diet. There is no one size fits all.
Choosing a side with your healthy food shouldn’t have to derail your diet if you have smart goals in mind and how to achieve them. Eat healthy and be well.

Winter Blues Winding Down

With the weather changing in most places of the US, seems like relief from the cold winter is on its way. Yeah! For a lot of people that means seeing more sunlight, an uptick in their moods, and of course moving out of the bulking mode to shredding mode but is that all that signals the end of the winter blues?
For me, end of winter means that we are able to go hiking again! Hiking before the bugs show up and before the heat shows up is always a plus. Not to mention that with the weather change, dogs can get a longer walk too—remember, they like exercise too and need it as much as we do. Winter blues also means with the lack of sunshine, we tend to rely more on supplements like Vitamin D so with the ability to go outside more, we can rely less on supplements and more on mother nature.
While winter continues to wind down, remember jacket weather is on its way out so if you have a goal to meet for your summer body, now is the time to work towards it because progress takes time and won’t come from a crash diet or constant exercise at the last minute!
