Which supplement should I take? #Supplement Explorer
Are you always on your phone looking at which supplements you should take? Do you look at reviews? How do you decide what to buy?
As someone who has been in the nutraceutical industry for over 10 years, I’ve worked with many suppliers and companies to understand why an ingredient is chosen, what research is behind it, and how to sell it to a consumer, so if you are looking for some answers to questions you may have, drop a comment, or even better check out the Supplement Explorer on the site. It is free to use, 3 questions, and a simple output. No info is stored.I made the Supplement Explorer purely for my use and then thought, well, if it is useful for me, maybe it is useful for others. The tool is not affiliated with any company or brand, but was just a way for me to showcase what I find useful. If you use it, do give me feedback as to what you’d like to see it on too.
Stay well and remember, before taking any supplements, check with your doctor if it is a good fit for you or not!

Impossible breakfast sandwich

Recently, I went to Starbucks and noticed that they had a new sandwich—the Impossible breakfast sandwich. Like the Beyond Meat burger, it is an alternative patty without meat. Did it taste good? How much protein is in the sandwich? Would I get it again?
So after the barista warms it up and gives the sandwich to you it looks like the pic. You can see that the sandwich has cheese and egg in it too. This along with the patty makes it a 21g protein sandwich! That’s pretty good plus at Starbucks it is available all day if in stock not just at breakfast. How does it taste? Personally, I loved it and can’t wait to get another one. It really tastes like it should have always been a menu item and I don’t feel like I’m eating anything processed. The flavor, texture, and consistency is all there. What are your thoughts on alternative protein?

Dog food recall

Do you have a dog? Dogs provide us much joy and love while we provide them that too along with food and home but just like babies depend on us for food so do dogs. If you are a typical dog owner, you likely give the same food every day to your dog along with some treats along the way. Most likely you are also paying attention to dog food recall news too because you don’t want to find out your dog is sick way too late. So what is causing the latest dog food recall? Aflatoxins!
Aflatoxins are molds that are produced by fungi and can be found on corn, maize, peanuts, rice, and other grains. The latest recall shows many dogs are getting sick by vomiting and even dying. Why does this occur? Typically, we feed the same food every day to your dog so the build-up occurs very quickly in their stomach resulting in possible illness. What can you do? Follow the news for any dog food recalls and reach out to the brands because they usually will answer your questions. Read more about the recall here:

Black eyed peas

You’ve probably heard of the group Black Eyed Peas and their hit songs like “I Gotta A Feeling” but did you know black eyed peas are also a vegetable! Whoa! So what makes them great? Do you eat them?
For me, Southern tradition dictates that eating black eyed peas and collard greens brings you good luck and wealth through the year if eaten the first day of the year—aside from actually liking both veggies, this tradition is a bonus so why not partake in it. Read more about the tradition here:
https://gardenandgun.com/recipe/why-do-we-eat-black-eyed-peas-on-new-years-day/
Not only our black eyed peas plentiful in protein when eaten in the right quantity but also full of potassium so those of us who don’t like bananas have an option here. Also, since they are complex carbs, they will take longer to digest so because of their fiber content you’ll feel full longer too. Plus, you can fry, bake, saute them too so there is a way to prepare them so that you like them. Personally, I look forward to eating them each year and just like the taste of them.

Walking your way to success

With the new year underway, many of us will likely make a fitness resolution but I prefer to make a fitness goal. Or you may even have a Fitbit or Apple Watch for tracking your steps but scheduled walking is the best way to meet your goals. This year, I’m going to amp up my walking. It is easy to take walking as not exercise since no weights are involved but even 30 mins can do your body so much good. For me, the challenge is walking in the winter.
Even with a dog who loves walks, walking outside in the cold is tough. So what can you do? Here’s what I’m going to try. I’m going to try to get up 30 mins earlier, put on a coat and hat, grab the dog and walk outside for at least 20-30 mins. Not only will this be an energetic start for me and the dog but I’ll be able to tackle the day with an active attitude. Sounds simple enough right? Well, let’s see if I can do it. If not, there is always the treadmill at the gym but then you have to make the effort to go to the gym!

Gratitude Day 4

This year you saw a lot on the news from politics to covid-19 to employment to more but none stuck more than the unemployment rate this year. The wide disparity between blue and white collar was more pronounced this year than any other year. With the stimulus check debate ranging, many are struggling to have the basics of food, shelter, and a job.
Let’s be grateful for the jobs we have. Even if you don’t like what you do, having a job in these difficult times is important. I hope you and your family are staying well! If you are able to help others, please do so by reaching out to feedingamerica.com or visiting your local shelters and seeing what they need.

Gratitude Day 3

Another thing that the pandemic forced on us was the need to be creative. As many restaurants were closed, you had no choice but to cook. That’s good if you know how to cook but what if you don’t? Well, it gave you a chance to try many delivery services or just buy groceries and start cooking. Which boat were you in?
For me, I discovered my love for using the instant pot! What a fantastic cooking vessel especially to make Indian food. Tastes great and fast too!

Gratitude Day 2

Another thing that the quarantine forced us to do is delay haircuts so now you have people with longer hair moreso than normal. All good or not is subjective but the pandemic allowed for some experimentation where haircare was concerned.
I’m grateful that I have hair that I can experiment with it because stress was high this year so managing that was important or hair loss could have been accelerated. Eating right, sleeping, using a biotin and collagen shampoo are just some of the reasons hair can stay and grow.
