  • Which supplement should I take? #Supplement Explorer

Are you always on your phone looking at which supplements you should take? Do you look at reviews? How do you decide what to buy?

As someone who has been in the nutraceutical industry for over 10 years, I’ve worked with many suppliers and companies to understand why an ingredient is chosen, what research is behind it, and how to sell it to a consumer, so if you are looking for some answers to questions you may have, drop a comment, or even better check out the Supplement Explorer on the site. It is free to use, 3 questions, and a simple output. No info is stored.

I made the Supplement Explorer purely for my use and then thought, well, if it is useful for me, maybe it is useful for others. The tool is not affiliated with any company or brand, but was just a way for me to showcase what I find useful. If you use it, do give me feedback as to what you’d like to see it on too.

Stay well and remember, before taking any supplements, check with your doctor if it is a good fit for you or not!

  • Reminder: Don’t forget your Vitamin D!

Reminder: Don’t forget your Vitamin D!

As the weather changes, don’t forget to get in your Vitamin D. The best way to do this is stay out in the sun but if you live in the Northeast US, the sun sure is limited now so I guess you’ll have to supplement it.

I typically prefer D3+K2 combo because I get the benefit of D3 with some bone health benefits too from the K2 but if you are unsure which supplement you should take ask your doctor.

Dosage wise, I take 10,000IU (or two 5000 IU softgels) but again the dosage that works for you probably should be discussed with your doctor.

Don’t let the lack of sun prevent you from getting your Vitamin D!

  • Time-crunched

    Time-crunched

We all are time-crunched and sometimes that stress sure puts pressure on our health! What can you do about it?

Find a way to relax, be it by reading a book, meditating, yoga, hiking, or another activity. A stressed life will not result in a good night’s sleep or even progress at the gym or your diet truly helping you. The reason that I write this is that I see many people who give up on their goals quickly because they think everything is correct but don’t realize that they are stressed out.

Everyone gets stress and there is no way to avoid it but what we can do is mitigate against it so that it doesn’t affect our ongoing health!

The key message today is if you find ways to relax and unwind daily, you’ll be surprised how that impacts your daily life as well.

  • Pumpkin fatigue

    Pumpkin fatigue

Have you said to yourself yet that “it’s October and I’m done with pumpkin season!” I’ve said that a few times this week. Why?

I think the onset of the season in August totally causes consumer fatigue, not to mention that pumpkin spice is everywhere including in places you don’t expect—bathroom cleaning solutions. Companies definitely try to latch on to the trend but pumpkin spice in everything is not a trend I’m a fan of. Yes, I don’t have to buy everything pumpkin spice and I don’t but still how are you supposed to miss something if it is omnipresent, right?

Is there a solution to fixing the pumpkin spice epidemic? Sure there is, speak with your wallet. A consumer’s greatest strength and ability to change what manufacturers are putting out is through their wallet. Next time, you are unsure about something, instead of starting a hashtag on Twitter, consider speaking with your wallet.

On a side note, is it too early to talk about Christmas flavors like chestnut praline? I mean, pumpkin spice season started in August so…

  • A healthy cookie

    A healthy cookie

When I travel, one thing that I crave is sweets so Made Good Cookies are highly recommended. Not only are they delicious and soft and melt in your mouth but they are gluten-free too! Usually, gluten-free means that they don’t taste good but these are amazing. If I gave you two cookies side by side that were both soft baked and the same flavor, you definitely wouldn’t be able to tell them apart based on taste and looks.

The cookies are organic and made with whole grains and have about 13g carbs or 12g net carbs so not exactly keto-friendly but you could still eat them on the keto diet without sacrificing all your carbs with this treat. The ingredients also show lots of vegetable extracts and powder so the nutrients are coming from them which is always a good thing, right? Finally, I also like that they are made in a nut-free facility so if you want to share your cookies with someone with a nut allergy, you can feel a little better about doing so.

Since I do have a wicked chocolate craving and sweet-tooth, the double chocolate flavor definitely appeals to me. Enjoy this sweet treat!

  • Eating at the airport

    Eating at the airport

On all my many work trips, my one go-to, while I travel, is cheese sticks or nuts. I’m always looking to limit sugar because let’s face it, vacation is supposed to be fun but no wants to derail their healthy diet.

Have you noticed if you go to grab a beverage at most airports, the sugar content is always near 20g or more per serving? Make sure you know how to read that nutrition label (hopefully you read my earlier post) because often times there are more servings in the bottle and the label only shows info for one serving.

I’m also looking for healthy foods when eating so that does not mean just eating grilled chicken on top of a salad. If you go to most restaurants, you can ask for a burger without the bun or grilled chicken w a side of Chipotle-style rice. It all depends on what your definition of eating healthy is.

Another thing that I cannot do while traveling is figuring out what ingredients are in the food unless it is packaged so I have to make smart decisions as to where to eat and what portion. Most restaurants will give you more food than you can eat so be careful. While traveling you can overeat before the vacation has even started so make sure you only eat till you are full and don’t eat to clean your plate. Yes, that does entail food waste but that’s another topic of discussion.

If you must eat packaged foods, look for items with simple ingredients you recognize and can pronounce. Look for high protein as that will keep you full unless you’re doing the keto diet, then you’ll look for high fat. Drink plenty of water because sometimes you’re not hungry but just thirsty.

Remember, don’t go off track too much because the hard work you put in to get healthy will be harder to achieve again with a setback. Maintenance is key!
