  • Which supplement should I take? #Supplement Explorer

Are you always on your phone looking at which supplements you should take? Do you look at reviews? How do you decide what to buy?

As someone who has been in the nutraceutical industry for over 10 years, I’ve worked with many suppliers and companies to understand why an ingredient is chosen, what research is behind it, and how to sell it to a consumer, so if you are looking for some answers to questions you may have, drop a comment, or even better check out the Supplement Explorer on the site. It is free to use, 3 questions, and a simple output. No info is stored.

I made the Supplement Explorer purely for my use and then thought, well, if it is useful for me, maybe it is useful for others. The tool is not affiliated with any company or brand, but was just a way for me to showcase what I find useful. If you use it, do give me feedback as to what you’d like to see it on too.

Stay well and remember, before taking any supplements, check with your doctor if it is a good fit for you or not!

  • Vitamin D news

    Vitamin D news

Not sure if you saw the news this past week or so but there was big news about Vitamin D and its effectiveness against Covid-19. I’ll post the article link below but remember how your body responds to a supplement is purely based on your individual chemical makeup. How much you should take or what type of supplement you should take totally depends on yourself and your conversation with your doctor. So what did the Vitamin D article say?

If you are a fan of Dr Fauci, then you’ll see in the article that he believes that both Vitamin C and D can help mitigate against Covid-19. As you know, aside from supplements, a good diet and a good night’s sleep are just as important. With the right combo of all three, you are likely are going to be healthier to fight off infection but nothing is for sure certain but if you try your best in all three areas, you are at least doing the best you can to prevent and fight off infection.

    Product alert: mini cones

Do you love ice cream? Don’t want to sacrifice dessert after a meal? Want something low in calories? Trader Joe’s mini cones are a must have in your house. Why? Read on.

To me, this satisfies my chocolate and ice cream craving in under 90 calories so can’t beat it plus it costs under $3 at Trader Joe’s so that’s good too. I also like that you can spoil yourself with a little fun treat whenever you want with this cone, no need to go too far or spend too much money. I especially like the hard chocolate shell on the ice cream and chocolate shell in the cone. It is a dairy product with a gluten cone so beware if that is important for you, otherwise enjoy!

    Challenge update

So as I mentioned a few days back, I’m sticking with not eating out for 29 days this month. How’s it going, you wonder? Well, there have been some tough days but not for the reasons you think.

What’s been tough for me is that I didn’t realize how much readjusting my body had to do, that too when I wasn’t eating out too much before. Now that so many of my eating habits are at home, I do feel better and plan what I eat too. Plus, sticking with my exercise plan is helping too. What made this process hard is that I was also doing low carb, more keto-ish but not keto. Despite this uneasy feeling, I’m still able to stick with it. So success is on its way!

  • Fat Cookie

    Fat Cookie

Since I have a wicked sweet tooth, I’m always looking for ways to eat something healthy that is sweet. I mean, there are only so many fruits that I can eat that are sweet. So off to the grocery store I went looking for something that would work to satisfy my craving. What did I find?

I happened upon the Fat Snax cookie! I bought them not knowing what it would taste like but I did like the label which said that it was keto, low in carbs and was chocolate chip flavor. So what did I think? It was Amazing! I was full eating it, met my sweet craving, and didn’t have any after taste. I liked that the two cookies were the size of a normal cookie versus mini which happens when you buy healthy items. Interested in them? I got mine at Target!

    Get your flu shot!

Do you want to feel well and look good like in this pic? What can you do about it?

With the pandemic continuing and the fall season almost here, not sure what you feel about vaccines but I personally think that this year, one should take the flu vaccine. Why? Well, if you get sick, how will you know the difference between flu and covid-19 as the symptoms do overlap some? I for one want to mitigate risks so I’m going to take the flu shot. How about you? Will you take it?

#FF What did you miss this week?

On this important anniversary, let’s take a moment to remember all those that we lost on 9/11. May they rest in peace!

This week, I talked a lot about the challenge I’m doing in the month of September. Check out these posts to learn more:

    Challenge effects: food portions

    Challenge effects: less sugar

    Eating at home!

    Labor Day fun!

    Stay well!

  • Challenge effects: food portions

    Challenge effects: food portions

By limiting my eating out this month, I hope to be able to measure portions a bit better. Unlike Europe, American portions are HUGE so by eating at home, I can control how much I eat and also track it better. Using MyFitnessPal, I’m hoping to better track my progress this month. This is super important to stay on task!

In the US, we tend to get too much food no matter whether we buy groceries or eat out so that leads to food waste but I digress. Anyway, if you don’t have the time to weigh out food, I recommend using your palm. I use that as a gauge of how many carbs to eat and then weigh half palm protein and fat. Is this scientific? Nope, but it does work for portion control.

Does this help me? Indeed! Especially if I have to do work lunches or dinners—though limited now due to the pandemic. Plus, you’re never without your palm so you can always adjust what you’re eating. We all want simple ways to stay on task and what could be better than utilizing the tool—your palm—that you already possess.

  • Challenge effects: Less Sugar

    Challenge effects: Less Sugar

Another positive effect of not eating out and cooking at home is that I can control my sugar content. One thing that can creep up in your diet in many ways is sugar. Because sugar comes in numerous forms from Ace-K to honey to maltodextrin, even if you think you aren’t consuming it, you might be. What can you do about it? Well, if you make the food at home, you will know how much sugar you are consuming and it won’t just creep in.

Simply remember if you didn’t cook it, it likely is in your food. Think about this, you cook at home, you know what all the ingredients you used are, what was cooked before, and how it was cooked. When you buy something, you know it has certain ingredients because it’s on the label or on the menu but you don’t know how it was cooked or what was cooked before so you might be getting hidden ingredients in your product. My advice is to plan your grocery trip with a shopping list and you’ll likely be able to avoid impulse buying and get items that you are likely to use thus avoiding spoilage as well as avoiding high sugar items.

    Stay well!

  • Eating at home!

    Eating at home!

One of my challenges for September is to not eat out for 29 days out of 30 days! Why this challenge? Many reasons but I hope to be able to stick with it so I can see the effect of not grabbing quick meals from my favorite places in times of limited time. So what do I hope to achieve with the 29 days of not eating, just a sense of feeling better. Why not 30 days? Well, I know a special event is coming up so planning for it too.

With Taco Bell, getting rid of Mexican pizza, a good homemade meal is making and eating it at home. Just simple ingredients and voila, you’ve got a fantastic meal so do you have to miss eating out, nope—as long as you know how to cook a little. So what does all this mean? Take your favorite meal and see if it can be prepared at home and maybe it won’t be hard to stick to your goal.

    Stay well!
