  • Which supplement should I take? #Supplement Explorer

Are you always on your phone looking at which supplements you should take? Do you look at reviews? How do you decide what to buy?

As someone who has been in the nutraceutical industry for over 10 years, I’ve worked with many suppliers and companies to understand why an ingredient is chosen, what research is behind it, and how to sell it to a consumer, so if you are looking for some answers to questions you may have, drop a comment, or even better check out the Supplement Explorer on the site. It is free to use, 3 questions, and a simple output. No info is stored.

I made the Supplement Explorer purely for my use and then thought, well, if it is useful for me, maybe it is useful for others. The tool is not affiliated with any company or brand, but was just a way for me to showcase what I find useful. If you use it, do give me feedback as to what you’d like to see it on too.

Stay well and remember, before taking any supplements, check with your doctor if it is a good fit for you or not!

  • Is it a healthy snack or one that is disguised as healthy?

Is it a healthy snack or one that is disguised as healthy?

We all have our favorite grab and go snacks but some are healthier than others. I’m a huge fan of eating cashews or peanuts but let’s face it those are a lot of calories and healthy fats so what aside from that maybe I grab fruit to go but again that’s a lot of carbs so what’s the next best thing a bar because it should have protein right? Well, be careful with those bars. Why?

The problem with bars today is there messaging is all over the place—some have limited ingredients while others have high protein, others are keto, others are gluten-free, and so on and on. If I was deciding on which bar to eat, I look at 3 or 4 things. What are they? I look at protein content because protein keeps you full longer followed by fiber content I then look at sugar content because that definitely influences the carb content and if fat was my source (keto diet) then that is also looked at. If I notice that the sugar content is super high no matter the amount of protein, I would pass on the bar. The best decision to make when choosing a bar is if you can’t understand the nutrients that it has then it is probably a bar you shouldn’t pick up.

Choosing the right bar as a snack could make all the difference between eating a healthy item versus one that is disguised as a healthy item! Bars have to taste good but if it tastes like a candy, you better look at that nutrient content because that well-meaning bar snack might be derailing your healthy eating.

  • Masks are still in vogue

    Masks are still in vogue

It’s been over a month since many states have been open amidst the pandemic being underway but has anything changed in your city/state? Are people still wearing masks? gloves? or are they back to normal? Should life resume as normal as if the pandemic never happened? No matter how much you may wish to go back to life as normal, I fear we are not ready for this.

Continue wearing that mask! Until there is a vaccine, constant consensus via testing methods, or there is some other breakthrough that shows we can’t get the disease as previously determined, then what’s the harm in wearing your mask and keeping that social distance going on longer. You might save your life and someone else’s in the process. I too need to go to work and resume daily activities but until I’m confident that the pandemic is over, I’ll be taking precautions including using sanitizers and washing my hard even more. Best to stay safe and err on the side of too much precaution than go full throttle towards normalcy.

  • Sweet tooth recipe

    Sweet tooth recipe

Breakfast is one of my favorite meals. Why? Not only because you get to break your fast (hence breakfast) from sleeping but also because it revs up your body via nourishment to tackle the day. What you choose to eat in the morning can often times lead to lethargy or sustained energy. Today’s recipe is a nice sweet tooth side item but definitely not something you should base your whole breakfast meal on as it is missing many of the needed nutrients for sustained energy release.

If you like Nutella, this will be a recipe you would like to try. If you know how to make croissants or biscuits, you can start out making the biscuit or croissant as normal and before you bake both, insert some Nutella into it and then bake. The result is a wonderful decadent breakfast mini treat. Just like a cinnamon roll can be a mini or regular size, this too can be altered based on how you make the item so this way you don’t take in too many sugar calories or spoil your healthy breakfast.

Finding ways to enjoy your healthy meal is necessary so even if you can’t give up your daily bagel or croissant perhaps you can reduce their size and introduce a sweet ingredient so that your mind thinks ok, I’m eating this plus my healthy breakfast too.

  • Need a new book to read?

Need a new book to read?

A fantastic book that I finished reading is How will you measure your life? By Clayton Christensen et al. The book is relevant in these tumultuous times as people are constantly looking to make a difference be in their careers or personally. I think some of the best aspects of the book include where should you devote your time and that is shown through many examples from parenting to companies that pivot from a strategy. How does it apply to you? What do you hope to gain from it?

For me, the best message from the book was though promotions and raises are what we seek, those gains provide instant gratification but only for the short-term while investing in friends/families and relationships though long and cumbersome to develop, provide long-term and life-altering impact. Choose wisely where you invest your time. Why? Because what do you want to be remembered by?

Invest your self and your relationships as those will likely enrich your life more than anything else!

  • Grilling season is here!

    Grilling season is here!

Summer weather is here so it must mean grilling season is here. After cleaning up my grill from winter weather grime, I was ready to connect the propane tank and boom, I was ready to grill. So what did I grill first?

My first item to grill was corn on the cob. Of course, it had to be Indianized so lemon juice and spices were coating it. It tasted wonderful! Up next, I’m going to try grilling chicken, pineapple, and avocado. I can’t wait to try my favorites again this grilling season. This season I’m going to venture and try to grill a dessert too but I don’t know what it is yet so stay tuned as I’m sure a post on it will likely appear too!

Remember, grilling is a great way to eat healthy while being outside and soaking up some sun and getting some Vitamin D!

    Enjoy healthy eating and grilling!

    Stay well!

    Vitamin C from bread waste?

Do you need a protein powder shake after working out?

Don’t forget to check out the tags under the post to see other posts that covered that topic!

  • Do you need a protein powder shake after working out?

Do you need a protein powder shake after working out?

Have you noted that the gym culture necessitates you to have a protein shake after your workout? Why is this? Who came up with this idea? Yes, we know protein is good for building muscle and we know that the best time to build muscle is during recovery or sleep but where did this need to have a protein shake after working out come from?

Even I’m guilty of guzzling a protein shake after working out because that’s the fastest way to get protein into your body after working out but is this the only way? Nope! I would definitely prefer eating my protein but you know what, unless I’ve meal prepped, I’ll likely struggle to eat something healthy and full of protein so I turn to my shake. I’m guessing like many others, I too look at the protein powder as a convenience method because no matter whether you are vegetarian, vegan, or nonvegetarian, eating 20g of protein is tough!

So next time, don’t feel compelled to drink a protein shake just meal prep and you’ll be able to eat a healthy protein-packed meal instead!

  • Vitamin C from bread waste?

    Vitamin C from bread waste?

I recently read an article that I thought was interesting. A group of scientists has found a way to take bread that is food waste and via some processing convert it into a compound that could be used to make Vitamin C. Most vitamin C that people see in products is synthetic and we rely heavily on its availability based on what is in stock in China so this solution would be pretty innovative to tackle a problem, right?

Hopefully, this work continues and the scientists are able to scale-up and make this a reality but this is a promising start. Innovation often comes from food waste and this is just another way we can help our planet and environment. Sustainability can be achieved in multiple ways and these scientists proved it with this out of the box thinking.

  • Need a new book to read?

Need a new book to read?

Every Tuesday I’m going to share a new book that I read that I think you might enjoy too. This blog is more than just about food and ingredients, I wanted it to truly be about full mind fitness which means that a book might lead the way to expand ideas and thinking. Which book am I going to share first?

The Latte Factor by David Bach was one recently that I read and it was enlightening because it shows you that for the price of a coffee, you can not only pay yourself, but also automate that payment, and open your dream account to do something that you always wanted to. Intrigued? I too was wondering how just the price of a coffee could lead to you getting and achieving what you want. The writing was easy to understand and the teachings are great. Pick up a copy on Amazon or your favorite book store. A good read especially when we all think every day about how can I have a good-paying job but never seem to have money to do the fun things that I want to do?

You can find the book here as well: https://www.amazon.com/shop/2howyalldoing
