Tragedy strikes!

This week, I’m going to write about events that crop up in our lives and what to do to stay on track and if it can be done.

What happens when you have a death in the family or a co-worker passes? We know our being is altered and our mood is a reflection of that event. Some of us tend to stop eating to grieve while others of us over-eat such as to occupy our mind with something else. Both scenarios may be justified as grieving is different for everyone but is there any other option? The answer is maybe and it totally depends on how the event affects you.

The last thing on your mind when tragedy strikes is what am I going to eat or what workout am I doing next? Human nature is to first cope with the problem at hand and then move on to the routine tasks. However, if you have been reading up to now, you know that healthy snacks should be in your cupboard or pantry. On such days, grab that protein bar or shake and have something nutritiously filling as you may not have the appetite or desire to eat multiple meals so that one meal you do eat, make it a healthy one.

Other tips to staying healthy while grieving include meditating. Sometimes being with your thoughts and without any interruptions may help you focus and deal with the pain better. Or perhaps, you can pull out that yoga mat and lie on it with your eyes closed or do yoga, both of which should provide a sense of calming. Finally, if you are motivated enough, hit the gym as being around people may also help you get out of that funk.

Nutrition and health are important but remember they can’t be all consuming when tragedy strikes! Return to your routine and healthy lifestyle when you are ready and ask for help if you don’t know what to do next. 

Staying well is a journey with many ups and downs so stay positive!
