Obesity continues to be a big problem in the US but one thing that even I’m guilty of is indulging in is a free item. How do most of us get these free items? By participating in various reward programs from Starbucks, Dunkin, Chipotle, etc. You justify your free item by “I was going to go there anyway so I might as well participate in the rewards program and get my free item.” Sound familiar?
Sometimes free is not good! Just cause you get it free doesn’t mean it needs to be consumed. Think of all the extra calories you are taking in. Yes, you can take free items that are healthy but I doubt most of us are doing that. We are probably taking something that we like or the most expensive menu item since it is free. Rarely, do we think about what impact that item has on our health when we get it free. Human psyche is to enjoy free items so to change that is going to be tough.
Next time, you get a free food/beverage item, think about how that one item may impact your health and then perhaps you might skip in indulging it—-sounds nice to think about but so hard to do, right?
