Recently, I was at an event where we were discussing what influence a person’s workplace has on their purchase decision and I really had to think long and hard about that. Why?
When I buy a product or supplement be it at Whole Foods or Amazon or GNC, I’m looking first at 1) do they carry the product that I want 2) what’s the price and 3) is the product from a reputable company that I trust. I don’t ever think about who works there and what input they have had in terms of getting that product to the store. Should I be thinking about that?
For majority of supplement, health, and fitness consumers what is important to them is that they are living a healthy, quality life via whatever means they have chosen. Yes, it is important if the company is giving back to the community or if buying one bottle of a product results in donation of a portion of the sale to a charity or some other charitable cause is supported but for the most part that is not the driver of the purchase. If someone is interested in knowing more about a product and all that it stands for, then perhaps they open their iPhone and decided to learn more about it but that likely isn’t happening at the time of purchase so back to the question, is it important who makes the product at the company?
I definitely think it is important to know who makes the product, in terms of knowing it is a reputable company with safety and legality in mind but I don’t think most consumers are looking for the story initially when looking at taking a supplement; the story for the consumer is always going to be what can it do for me and how can it help me attain what I seek?
