Healthy Snacking

Lately, I’ve been seeing many questions and posts about healthy snacking. I’ve seen comments about people thinking pretzels are good while others say rice cakes to others saying protein bars and eggs. So much confusion so what does one do? What do you turn to?

Depending on your goals, my recommendation is always to turn to items you cook or fruits that you enjoy. I know some fruits have a lot of sugar but not all fruits in moderation are bad for you plus there are tons of varieties. Not only do you get good fiber and antioxidants from fruits, but you also can find them easily in the grocery store. Other snacking options for me include cottage cheese, nuts, and of course different types of bars like Cliff bars, Larabars, etc. But don’t bars go against my earlier statement of cooking? Yes, but sometimes you sacrifice for convenience so then the answer is what?

Snacking is a huge area in the food industry and there is no one size fits all. One thing food manufacturers know is that we are snacking more and more of the snacking is on-the-go, so you will find more options in stores to confuse you as to which is the best snack for you. What you can do, however, is research which product you need for snacks to keep you full or meet your goal because you know what you are looking for—crunchy, healthy, spicy, etc. For me, the best go-to has always been fruits but for you, it might be something else. With the mango season underway, I know what I’ll be snacking on, how about you?

Stay well!
