With the pandemic, many lives have been changed but so have many industries. One trend the food industry is watching is the keto diet. Why? As the lockdown continued, sales of keto products declined while bakery items purchases increased. So does this mean that the keto diet is over?
I don’t think a blanket statement saying keto is over is valid because everything has its highs and lows and diets are like that too. What you can tell is that people who gave up on keto likely did so because it was difficult to maintain it like during the lockdown so comfort foods might have been chosen instead. I think the trend will stay as long as people are seeing results. Remember, the Atkins diet was around for a while before it dramatically lost its appeal. It too was low carb, a high-fat diet so does that mean people aren’t still doing it, highly unlikely. So what’s next for keto?
I think you will continue to see keto products but just in a reduced capacity until a new study comes out saying something wonderful about keto again. My advice generally is to eat what makes you healthy and allows you to stay fit. Diets are very restricting because if you fall off the wagon, how do you overcome it? A lifestyle change is better long term than a diet but one must do what is best for their health. Seek advice from your doctor or nutritionist as you pursue your journey.
Stay well!
