As a kid, did you ever play with building blocks or Legos or build a house of cards? Such fun activities as a kid are now used as team building activities as an adult. What do these activities have to do with your professional life? How can it affect your health?
As a kid, we played with these blocks because it was fun and a creative outlet but as an adult, we turned them into team building activities? Why? Think about this building a house of playing cards is fun individually but when you have to build it with others who share their ideas or have their own approach to building the best house of cards, chaos can result. If done right, this activity requires good communication and patience as results aren’t instantaneous. Is that why companies do this? Partially yes! Another reason is to evaluate how you handle stress.
If you ever stress about your job and its daily activities, then this house of cards activity might sound fun but could be stressful for you. By acknowledging how different team members react to different scenarios, the company hopes to foster better communication, and hopefully, the activity provides you some learnings for yourself on how to manage stress as no one wants excess cortisol or belly fat.
Find a fun activity you enjoyed as a kid and see if it still gives you enjoyment or not. You might be surprised!
Stay well!
